The Role
I really enjoyed my time at HSBC. The project set for me was engaging and kept me busy for the full 8 weeks. I thought I would struggle to find things to do but my team were always willing to get me involved with tasks outside my project. The internship team were very organised and I knew who to go to if I had any issues.
I really got along with my team and it was good to be involved with both graduates and longer serving colleagues. They was always willing to help me and answer any questions and really got us involved. I also felt valued by other interns when working with them on group projects which was a great way to make friends.
I felt very supported by all of the staff and my line manager. In the first week my manager set up meetings for me to have with all of the team so I could ask any questions I had and get a better insight into what they all do. This was really helpful so I knew which colleagues could support me with what questions.
I think the amount of work was perfect. I was never bored but didn't feel like I was being set too much. My team was aware of the inter projects I had so knew how busy I was and how much free time I had which was useful so they wasn't setting me large amounts of work I couldn't keep up with.
We was given a fair amount of responsibility. I was set a project at the start which I worked on continuously for the 8 weeks and had quite a bit of freedom with this as I was responsible for the final presentation. My team trusted me to come back at the end of the 8 weeks with a good presentation to show the wider members.
The skills I have developed throughout my internship have helped me grow a lot. I have gained confidence in talking to senior people and have learnt to be more confident in my self and my ideas. Presentation skills have been developed which will assist me in my degree as well as research skills.
The Company
The atmosphere was positive in the office. People always got their work done but was always willing to talk and have a laugh. It was a good environment so I felt relaxed but not too relaxed that I didn't feel like working. I enjoyed the flexibility of the office and being able to move around seats to work where you felt comfortable.
The placement was very well organised and managed. We had multiple induction days and training days which meant we was always interacting with the internship management team. Any emails or queries I had were responded to fast. I felt communicated to not only during my time here but also during the on boarding and interview process.
The internship was very invested in. They set up multiple training days and gave us e-learning modules to complete to develop our individual skills. It felt like they really wanted us to feel part of HSBC and learn about the values of the company itself rather than just what will be expected of us in our day to day roles.
Sports and Social Club
I would love to get chance to be part of the graduate programme to further develop my skills. I enjoy the environment here and everyone has been really positive about HSBC as employers. The flexibility of the role and the fact I can experience all different areas of the company really appeals to me.
The Culture
The intern team organised social leaders who could organise socials for us. Being around lots of other interns in a city centre meant we could go out and socialise after work which made it even more enjoyable. After the development and induction days I formed good friendships with other interns who I hope to stay in contact with.
I stayed at home so didn't have to pay anything extra as I lived a bus journey away from my placement. Working in the centre of Birmingham was really useful in terms of places to socialise and transport into the job.
Nightlife in Birmingham was good and there was lots of areas to go out. It was fun staying in the hotel with other interns as it meant we was all in one place and could mix with people from other internship locations rather than just the interns in my office.
The intern team was very keen for us to get involved in other things outside of our work project. This was fun as it meant I felt I could put time into other things such as the charity project without feeling like I wasn't doing my actual internship project work.
