The Role
I have really enjoyed my internship, I have been given a lot of responsibility and a lot of relevant work to further my development. Throughout the experience I have felt that I have improved a lot and I have been given a lot of opportunities to sit down with different members of the team to discuss my on-going development.
My colleagues were really welcoming when I first joined the team and throughout my internship, people were always willing to give up their time to talk to me about their experience or go through certain ideas or concepts with me to further my learning and development.
Really supportive management and supervisors, always available whenever I needed to contact them and always willing to give up time to help.
I was very busy throughout the internship and the work I was given was sufficiently challenging and contributed to my learning. The projects I was given generally lasted over a few days so I was able to plan my time day-to-day and ensure I could complete the projects and tasks I had been allocated as well as make the most of the other opportunities available to interns in the bank, namely the chance to attend a variety of events and workshops put on by the bank to further my development.
I was given a lot of responsibility over my internship, a lot of the projects I was involved with and tasks I carried out were used by the team in their role, I really felt that the work I was doing contributed to the team.
The skills I have developed over the course of the internship have definitely built upon my degree studies, taking concepts that I learnt in a classroom into a "real life" context of an investment bank. I felt that I was given work that was sufficiently challenging according to my previous studies in the area of accounting and finance and ensured I was able to develop my knowledge further over the course of the internship.
The Company
The general atmosphere in my office was pleasant, the volume wasn't too high or too low and it was easy to get work done there. The office set up also made it easy to talk to the team whenever appropriate which contributed to my enjoyment of the overall experience.
The internship was really well organised. Within the team I got the opportunity to work within every sector, which gave me a really good understanding of a the range of industries that they cover and how they all fit together - I think this will be especially useful looking ahead to a future career in research. The bank also organised various intern networking and workshop events which were also very well organised, covering a wide variety of topics and usefully spread out throughout the course of the internship so that I felt that I could make the most of them as well as make the most of my time on my rotations throughout the team.
I felt that the firm invested a lot in me. Individuals were always willing to give up their time to help me, the firm put on so many development events for me which included all the workshops and talks I attended as well as a full week of training at the beginning of the internship. The firm also has online learning platforms which I had full access to, so throughout my internship I was also able to take advantage of the courses offered on there to further my development in different topics. I also felt that the firm was fully invested in me relaxing and socialising whilst there, putting on events such as a Thames river cruise and white water rafting session for all the interns!
Company Parties/Events
Future employment prospects with the organisation are very appealing to me, providing a very friendly and welcoming work environment with lots of opportunities to take responsibility from an early stage in my career. I feel that the company offers significant opportunities to develop and build a solid career within this industry.
The Culture
Yes, the social scene amongst fellow interns was good. The interns all got to know each other in the first week of training which definitely made it easier to plan social events. Social events put on throughout the internship also gave more opportunities to meet more people. The social scene amongst the team was also good, with team drinks and barbecues giving great opportunity to network with colleagues in my team and get to know colleagues in other teams.
Working in London, the cost of living and socialising is very high compared to a lot of other places, however I felt that it was manageable and the bank put on a lot of subsidised events which really helped.
The nightlife in London is great, there's always something going on and a wide range of activities to suit every taste!
Yes, there were lots of opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work, for instance in my 4th week I represented the bank in the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge, a 5.6km run in Battersea Park alongside 15,000 other Londoners! The bank also has various other challenges and volunteering opportunities for staff to get involved in outside of work - there really is something for everyone.
