The Role
Working at Siemens has been very enjoyable and educative. I have acquired practical and theoretical knowledge in the production of small industrial gas turbines. I have been exposed to a manufacturing environment and have learnt how to execute projects effectively bearing in mind the safety considerations required at each step.
Each time I was faced with a difficult where I was completely unsure of the next step to take, I received support from my line manager and my colleagues. My opinions were valued and fairly judged when I delivered proposals. This enabled me to feel comfortable to discuss and ask questions freely.
Whilst working at Siemens industrial turbo-machinery Ltd, my line manager and the management were very helpful and directed and introduced me to other staff in the business. They gave me guidance with processes I was unfamiliar with and made my transition into the manufacturing environment smooth. They facilitated my growth and encouraged me to ask questions when unsure.
My schedule was quite balanced with little changes happening from time to time. There was always something to learn or something new to participate in. The projects I received required day-to-day management for them to move forward. So, this created quite a balanced schedule with an occasional increase in workload from time to time.
As a manufacturing Intern I was given some very important tasks which had a range. From raising expense orders for machines worth over £100,000 to conducting risk assessments for lay out changes in the shop floor. This placement has involved working one a variety of tasks, some outside the scope of engineering.
The time management, communication, coding, project management and research skills I acquired during my placement year will help me to be more effective in my final year of university when dealt with group projects and presentations. This placement year has thought me how to speak in front of large groups of people which is a skill I struggled with initially.
The Company
Siemens Invests in the personal development of the interns. We were required to partake in training programs aimed at developing our effectiveness in the delivery of presentations and communication at a professional business level. We were then advised to put these training programs into practice during the rest of the internship.
The Culture
Luckily for me I had fellow interns who were funny, exciting and supportive. This made every lunch-break something to look forward too. As we would talk about how our day was and share experiences. We also had a group chat where we shared memes and talked about game of thrones.
Lincoln has been the cheapest city I have lived in as a student. Getting my house through student housing was one of the best decisions I have made. I got value for the rent I was paying. I also lived in a very sociable aread with friendly neighbors who always invited us for BBQ's.
Myself and the other interns organised charity events where we were able to raise over £3,000 for prostate cancer. This was a team effort and was done by the organisation of football tournaments and conduction of raffles. I also had the opportunity to participate in the Lincoln 10K run along side my fellow interns.
