The Role
Although I really like the company, offices, and my colleagues, unfortunately I felt as if I did not have enough to do for several weeks, which was very frustrating. However, the work environment is very positive, and there is a lot of support. The professoinal development events HR put on were amazing!
I had a great team! We went go karting together which was a ton of fun. Everyone was really helpful and friendly, willing to take time out of their own projects to make me feel welcome and integrated into the team. Overall, I feel great about the connections I made over the summer.
I was given a good amount of support from my manager, as we met every single week. Although I wish I was given additional tasks when I first requested them, instead of having to wait a several weeks, I understand that the team had a lot going on and it was difficult to find a project that I could contribute to in the amount of time I was here for.
There was a lot of time when I had very little to do, due to having a large dependency on one of my team members. In addition, the project was very reliant on previous work she had completed, so whenever something went wrong I would simply have to wait for her to fix it, which sometimes took weeks.
Even though the project I was working on was very important, which was clear from the conversations I had with my team mates, my ability to contribute to the project was very limited, due to the complexity of the project and my lack of experience. So in a way I felt I was contributing to a great cause, just not a very sizeable amount.
Great learning experience! Technically, I learned a lot about how large software systems are structured, built, and maintained. In addition, I learned how to organize my time in a corporate environment and how to best go about networking. In addition I was exposed to different technologies I had never seen before, and feel much more prepared.
The Company
Although it was more quiet than other sections of the bank I visited, everyone was generally chatting and engaging while working most of the time. There was a lot of chat about cricket, and a lot of good natured banter going on that certainly made things more interesting for everyone.
It was incredible! I was very impressed by how smoothly everything went, and how perfectly balanced the amount of office time and intern development time were alotted. The staff ensured we were constantly engaged, supported, and challenged. For this section, BAML certainly exceeded my expectations. I would recommend doing an internship here to anyone.
The Culture
I made a great group of friends, that I will certainly stay in touch with after the internship. I did not meet a single person that was rude or negative. We had lunch together almost every single day, and made tons of plans outside of office hours, which was wonderful.
No surprises here. Central London is astoundingly expensive. One time I spent 42 quid on two gin and tonics in the city. It hurt. However, considering that there is a lot more opportunity and life in this city compared to other places in Europe, it seems natural that its this exclusive.
