The Role
The internship has been so much more than I hoped for - both in terms of the industry exposure and also because the atmosphere has been nothing but friendly. I looked forward to going to work every day and got involved with so many different areas of the job which was a massive benefit.
My team were always willing to take the time to explain things and also introduce me to new people and new concepts. They always checked in to make sure I was enjoying myself and getting invovled with as many things as I could - I really felt like I was part of a team.
Along every step of the way I felt like there were people I was able to reach out to - even if they weren't my direct supervisor or manager. They were happy to offer both career and personal development advice which is something I really valued, especially never having been in a finance environment before.
I always had things to be doing - whether it was helping out on a new or existing project with the team or whether it was part of my own individual projects - I had a really good balance of always feeling like there was lots to do but never feeling overwhelmed.
I was given much more responsibility than I expected - especially given I was an intern and the nature of my job. I felt really valued and it was great to feel like the team trusted my opinions and my work - especially when they would ask me to do more and more things to help.
My degree requires lots of different skills - some of which I definitely think the internship helped with. In particular I would draw attention to my public speaking and presenting skills which I was given the chance to practice a lot and develop with lots of useful advice from my team and peers.
The Company
The atmosphere has been one of collaboration, focus to the work that has to be done but also fun when the time is right - which is exactly what I wanted. I have always felt like everyone around would be there to help and nuture me in whatever capacity they were able to.
The team had clearly spent time planning what I would get up to - but also allowed space for spontaneity which was a good balance. Overall the sessions for the interns were well spread out - and generally useful - if not slightly too long in places but this was a minor issue.
The took time to really invovle me in projects, make sure I understood what was going on and also take time out of their days to speak to me - this is something I valued and felt like people really cared about my thoughts and development, not just whether I was being useful or not.

I would love to return into the future to work full time. My experience has been one of many highlights and the bank has one of the best atmospheres that I have experienced. The opportunities are vast and if I was lucky enough to gain an offer I would definitely come back.
The Culture
Great fun and team events amongst my department - but was quite difficult to meet interns from other areas of the bank - mainly because of our time constraints etc. The training didn't allow for much interaction between different department emails either but this might be difficult to change due to the nature of the training.
Central london is very expensive so I didn't live in London - I commuted from home due to the cost. Socialising was very expensive so I tended not to spend money when we went anywhere, just spent time with people but this was quite unfortunate - although it comes with working in London!
I didn't particularly go out late - work was too important and we weren't there for long enough.
There were lots of things going on in the bank - but it would have been better if they had been advertised to the interns more.
