The Role
I really enjoyed the project that I was given from my manager because it really did expose me to a variety of technologies. This meant that I was constantly learning about different kinds of frameworks and packages. I also enjoyed learning how technology impacts the business.
This rating is probably down to the standalone nature of my project which meant that I was working solo for 90% of the time without anyone but my manager knowing what I was doing, so it was hard to add value to your other colleagues. It was still good nonetheless.
Throughout my project I was in constant communication with my manager purely because we physically worked so close to each other, so he was a desk away from me. This meant that he was able to provide support whenever I had struggled which was very good.
I always had something I could do because of the challenging workload, yet still having enough time to network and meet people.
The responsibility I was given wasn't necessarily present during my actual internship, but my responsibility came in the form of my project; because my project is to be used by people after I leave, the responsibility I am essentially given is to make sure the project is good.
I think the technical exposure will definitely help me in my degree because it was the first time doing a project of its nature. Building a server for a project is not easy, and now I leave with the knowledge of what technologies will make it easier for me.
The Company
The general atmosphere on the tech floor is a quiet one because everyone is focused, this meant that people would be reluctant to talk as much because they would be developing.
I think the structure of the internship was really well thought out and the infrastructure was there to set up a really good internship.
The firm provide access to several online platforms, e.g udemy. This is extremely useful as you can invest your time in developing your knowledge for the business as well as personal skills.
I think that the grad programme is appealing if you are interested in the industry itself. If you would like to work in finance, it is the place to be.
The Culture
The interns in my cohort were lovely people and it was a pleasure to work with them. However, I feel like the firm could make more of an effort to integrate the interns from differing business areas.
Cost of living is really high because it is Canary Wharf.
The area is pretty well connected to central with good nightlife.
Tons. There are so many other things to get involved in at the firm. I got involved in setting up a podcast, setting up a games day and a charity day.
