The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. I felt that my placement allowed me to extend my knowledge of the business and take on real responsibility within the time that I was here. Through several separate projects I was able to develop both soft and technical skills and interact with colleagues throughout RBWM.
All my colleagues valued my contribution and were happy to help me with my own development and work as taking the time to introduce me to their own fields. I was always treated as an equal by my colleagues, with the culture of caring about the people within the business being taken seriously and enacted by all the colleagues I interacted with. Additionally, from the start of my internship, I felt that I was able to add value to my team and was always able to gain feedback when I requested it.
I had several mentor figures during my time on the internship. The role of a graduate mentor while on the programme was incredibly useful helping me discuss the tasks I'd undertaken and encouraged me to reflect on this. My placement managers also struck as very positive balance between supporting me on tasks and leaving me to complete tasks independently. Being managed remotely also gave me the opportunity to seek guidance from others In the same location as me which was encouraged by my manager.
I was busy every day with tasks to complete and several projects to work on. Although the projects all being given together seemed overwhelming at the start, however, breaking them down made things manageable and easy and meant I always had something to work towards.
In my placement I was given tasks that were impactful on different business areas and have been set to carry on after my time at HSBC ends.
Yes, the skills I've been able to develop will most definitely help me with my university work.
The Company
The office I worked in, First Direct, was extremely welcoming and supportive. The atmosphere made my internship extremely enjoyable and working within the atmosphere was motivating.
I feel like organisation was good overall, however there were some last minute changes made, mainly with holiday, that made plans need changing.
I was extremely surprised with how much has been invested into the scheme. I feel like the scheme is very important given how much has been invested in it.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
The internship has made me wish to work for HSBC in the future.
The Culture
There were good socials between my colleagues in other offices (on the internsip scheme) as well as a social each month within the FD office.
The cost of living was fairly cheap and socialising was slightly harder due to people being Widley dispersed.
Good
Yes, see mentioned office socials above.
