The Role
I enjoyed my placement - it was a great experience, I learnt a lot and got a lot of opportunities to network and develop skills in a supportive environment. Aside from placement work I also got really lucky to experience extracurriculars. I am really glad I got the opportunity.
I didn't feel that valued by my team, which did affect my confidence and self-esteem at work. I became much more introverted, and felt like I shouldn't be there at times. It is something I am still working to overcome.
I was given great support by the grad coach and OPM which I found was vital during my time at the bank in helping me overcome difficult situations, providing experience and advice on how to become a high flier, and how to leverage my position as an intern for development.
I began my internship with very little to do aside from e-learning, which resulted in me throwing myself into extra-curricular activities. Then I suddenly was given a lot to do. What I found difficult was that I would be given a lot of extra work rather late into the internship. I had to stay behind at work and get in early regularly.
I was given a significant amount of responsibility in producing my placement work as what I produced was then able to be used by the RMs straight away. I took on additional responsibilities as well.
The skills I developed were great. I was able to enhance my organisational, time management and interpersonal skills. I dealt with a lot of numbers and statistics - something which was out of my comfort zone. I believe I am leaving as a well rounded candidate with a better insight into the working world.
The Company
Welcoming and friendly. Everyone had time for each other, I was able to speak with members from multiple different business throughout the bank, everyone spoke to each other within the offices.
I don't think my work placement was well organised as my manager had little knowledge of how the internship worked and thus the expectations for us. This had a detrimental effect on my development as it took until week 4 to finalise objectives, but things were always being added on. I don't believe I was able to work to my best given this as it was difficult to manage my time with an ever increasing workload.
I completed the e learning which gave me a good understanding of regulations, how the bank worked, and its values. We had development days, and structured meetings.
There are a lot of areas within the bank that really interest me. I like how there is a lot of movement between roles, and that careers are really able to grow and develop within the organisation. It makes me want to work here
The Culture
Yes. There were a few socials within the interns in my region, and the interns in my office were great. We had a fantastic support system and I definitely found that having them in the office made my internship so much better.
Getting into work was costly when you add up the daily cost. Socialising and living was very reasonable.
Great I love the nightlife. I didn't go out much due to the fact that I found working life quite tiring, but we went out for drinks a decent amount.
Loads of opportunities. I got involved in an ERG, and 2 positions of responsibility within the intern programme. In the future I'd like to be involved in GenZ - I think it sounds very rewarding.
