The Role
The placement was very enjoyable. The jobs I was assigned and especially the people I worked with made the year exciting and informative. I also got opportunities to travel across the country and even the EU with this job. After doing a placement at Baxter I now know what I want to do after university and am planning on applying for the graduate scheme.
I looked forward to seeing the people I worked with everyday, and my team was always spending time together. I could talk to members of my team about anything, whether it was work related or not. Even since I have left Baxter I still spend time with people from work and consider them great friends.
My supervisors were incredibly supportive during my year at Baxter. They were happy to push me to do things outside of my comfort zone, which helped me to develop both personally and professionally. As well as this, they also trusted me enough to get on with my job without constantly asking for updates.
It would be very unusual for me to have too much or too little to do at Baxter, as you are largely in control of your own work flow. If I ever felt I had too much, the team would be happy to help me out, or to push things back, and I would do the same. On the rare occasion, there would be a particularly busy or quiet time, but on the whole it was a good balance.
I was given a massive amount of responsibility while on placement at Baxter. During my time there, I was given the opportunity to organise, run, and facilitate a customer facing event, as well as flying out to Vienna to present on part of our product portfolio to consultant surgeons and other HCPs.
I received invaluable skills and training at Baxter, including presenting with impact, harnessing your personal impact, and managing in the matrix. I also learnt how to communicate effectively, be confident in my ideas, and organise and run customer facing events. These skills will help me in future for my career.
The Company
Due to the location of the office, and the fact that many of the employees of Baxter are field based, sometimes the office can be quiet. However, if you spend time with the right people, then the office can still be fun, especially on a friday, which is casual dress and you can get a full english breakfast.
The placement was very well organised and I had plenty of training and activities in my first few months to help me adjust to the role. My workload and how complicated the work was steadily increased throughout my year at Baxter and we had group activities for the placement students organised.
The company invested a lot in my personal training and development. They did this through providing the relevant training courses, pushing me out of my comfort zone, and allowing me to take more responsibility in my work. I had regular meetings with my manager to develop, as well as having a mentor outside of my team.

I would love to work for Baxter in the future, and I am applying for the graduate scheme for after I finish university. The scheme is a great opportunity as it is four 6-month rotations in different areas of the business, which will give me a good foundation to build my career on.
The Culture
There wasn't much of a social scene between the placement students, but I had friends in other areas of the business who I would go to the pub or to dinner with on a regular basis, as well as spending time with my team in a social manner outside of work.
The rent in the area is fairly high, as I was paying £600 pm for a room in a shared house, and petrol prices were very high, which is not helpful for someone who drives 45 minutes each way to work. However, other amenities, such as night life, and food shopping were quite reasonable.
The area is a little quieter than I am used to, as I come from a big city, but I enjoyed nights out on a regular basis. Although there wasn't as much option for places to go, the friends I made were great and the clubs were cheap and interesting.
There were plenty of opportunities to get involved with things outside of work, such as volunteering for Horatio's garden and Canine Partners. There were also social committee activities such as an escape room, inflatable table football, pub quiz, and cream tea, which the office could get involved with and bond over.
