The Role
I really enjoyed this placement, it was a well organised 8 week programme that really enabled me to gain a holistic view of both the company and the insurance industry as a whole. Everyone at the company was very welcoming and helpful; willing to answer any questions that I had throughout.
I was placed in a small team within a larger business sector and everyone within my immediate team was very welcoming and friendly. I was treated as an equal and was given the opportunity to make active contributions to the work that they did. I was also introduced to many senior members of the company as a result of the various meetings and work that I did with my team.
I was given a lot of support throughout my placement. I had not had any previous experience in this industry and therefore needed some guidance in the first couple of weeks and my colleagues were happy to oblige. They answered any questions that I had and took the time to explain various concepts to me. I was not micromanaged and was given space to do my own work but there was always someone around that I could ask for some help from if needed.
This did vary throughout my placement but there was always something to be doing. We were given a group project and individual project to do right at the beginning of our placement, and we set our own objectives that we were supposed to achieve/complete throughout the 8 weeks. We were encouraged to be proactive in meeting various senior members in the company to further our understanding of the industry and to hopefully find an area that we would be interested in working in in the future. All of this combined with the work that I did for my team kept me busy throughout.
I took full responsibility for the work that I produced but as my work was going to clients it was thoroughly checked through before it was sent off.
This placement has given me a lot of confidence which I am sure will serve me well in the future. It has given me a great insight into working in a corporate environment and has furthered my interest in this industry.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly and welcoming, this combined with a good work ethic made it a nice environment to be in.
Compared to other internships this one compares well. Our teams were prepared for us and had work set up for us to do, also we had regular speaker sessions where a senior member of the company would give us a talk on the industry.
I felt that the company invested a lot of time and effort into us and this scheme. The tasks that were given to us were slightly challenging but designed to build our confidence and skills, which I feel they did.
Company Parties/Events
At this stage they are appealing. There is such a vast array of job roles this company provides, ranging from client facing, market facing, internal etc that there will be something that will interest me. I have already got to know some areas but I am sure that there are more roles out there I am yet to know about.
The Culture
Yes, it is a very social industry.
This placement is in London - the cost of living is high. The placement is paid but it is something that you accept with the location.
Lots of pubs and bars to get an after-work drink.
Not hugely.
