    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The environment and culture at Barclays is wonderful. Individuals are happy to help and share their knowledge. The internship was rewarding with training sessions and many opportunities to meet people of different areas to learn more about Barclays and the industry. Events are well organized and there are many networks that you can explore.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team that I was placed in was great. It was not a big team but everyone was supportive, patient, and willing to explain unfamiliar concepts. Feedback was given to help you learn and improve, and there is a lot you can learn just from listening or engaging in conversation about the team.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • It depends on you. I quite enjoy figuring out the ropes myself, but if I got stuck, my team would be very happy and willing to help. I asked a lot of questions to keep me going and on my feet, but I think my team has been great in giving me a good amount of guidance such that I can still challenge myself.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It depends on the nature of the team you are placed in. For example, for my placement project, many instances required me to contact individuals outside the team, and especially during this time (summer), many people are on leave and often there is a time delay between what you can do and things to do moving forwards. But once that gets going, there is a good amount of work to be completed.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As much as you want is what I would say. It depends on what you make out of the placement. When I realized sometimes it may take awhile for individuals to get back to you in order to continue the project, I reached out to ask for other tasks that I could engage in to help the team out.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Coming from a non financial background, I was exposed to a lot of new financial concepts and technical terms within the industry. In terms of technical skills, there are always new commands to learn in excel which will help me in my degree, but also developing skills to engage in conversation with new people to learn about their experiences as well as understand the industry better.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was great, besides the lack of natural sunlight. Team is tight knit, often head for coffee or lunch together, and we sit all together. Even people around you are nice and happy to chat, and the environment is great. It's generally a good level of quiet besides when people make calls, and is a great working environment.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was well organized with schedule training approximately once or twice a week. There were also good objectives set by HR that encouraged us to interact and meet other individuals of different areas to improve our understanding of Barclays and the industry. Correspondence was fast and most questions/concerns (if any) would be resolved very quickly.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Barclays invests a lot in training individuals. This is done by many training sessions for your relevant function, and many speaker events that would help you build a better understanding of your function, Barclays, as well as the industry. The opportunities are up to you to take, but there are many opportunities for you to develop and grow.

    5/5

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    4/5

  • Barclays is a great environment and the people are wonderful. There is good feedback and senior individuals are very willing to teach and share their knowledge with you. It has a flexible working environment and good internal mobility such that you are able to explore different areas and develop yourself as you progress your career.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • It depends on your cohort, but within our function, we managed to organize a few social events to share our experiences within the function, as well as instances where we met up with other graduates to understand and learn more about the function. Canary wharf also has many restaurants, bars, etc. that will allow you to socialize with ease.
