The Role
I enjoyed the internship a lot. I had the opportunity to learn a lot of new technologies that I hadn't learned before. The team was understanding of my progress and set simple tasks to begin with that got more complex as I progressed. I worked on a project that wasn't "just" an intern project - my product will still be used and continued to be developed after I'm gone.
I was treated well by my colleagues and felt valued. They treated me as equals and it was nice to talk to them. When I needed help, they were usually available and could explain concepts that I needed to know. J.P. Morgan has a good office climate where everyone is approachable.
My supervisors helped me throughout the internship. When I had questions, they were available most of the time, and when they were working on an urgent issue, they got back to me after they finished in a timely manner. The requirements for the project were set out clearly, even though they changed throughout the internship, but this is usual in the tech sector.
I can say that I was never bored. I always had something to work on and there were never any blockers that hindered me from working. On the other hand, I was given enough time to do online courses on the technology I was using; this independent learning was quite useful.
I was given a lot of responsibility over the product I was developing. Most of the choices in terms of design and architecture were left to me. I had to justify these choices, but that is normal. Although I did have that responsibility, I could still ask for help/guidance on these matters.
I learnt several new technologies. This will help me in future projects. Apart from that, I came to appreciate the importance and necessity of test driven development. I think that this dose of practical work is a nice addition to the theoretical aspect of software engineering that you get in university.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was good. Employees were approachable, no matter their status/rank. You could talk to the others about non work-related topics, too. Everyone was friendly and interns got to be involved in a lot of activities, too. This allowed us to get a clearer picture of what it is like to work at the company.
It was very organized. There were many interesting events for the interns.
The company invests a lot in personal training and development. I was given enough time to learn about concepts and technologies that I needed to use. This includes both finance-related and tech-related knowledge that is pertinent to the team I was working in. The online courses helped a lot, and I was able to learn a lot.
Financial Bonus
J.P. Morgan is a large and international companies. This significantly increases the flexibility you get in terms of location (geographically) and the area you want to work in. You can ask to be placed in a team that works with a specific tech stack or in a specific area, as long as there is a vacancy.
The Culture
Considering that there are a lot of interns in the same location, there was a good social scene. What also helped is that J.P. Morgan organized a variety of social events for us interns. There we got to know the others better and got to talk about our experiences. It also allowed us to network for work shadowing opportunities etc.
Living isn't particularly cheap but it's affordable. Social activities aren't too expensive either.
