The Role
This internship has been enjoyable. I have learnt a lot more than I thought I would and the exposure and opportunities available have been great. Even not coming from a non construction related degree, I always felt comfortable and everyone was friendly and willing enough to ask questions to. Also, the work was a mixture of tasks such as minutes and doing presentations and reports
I felt very valued by my colleagues especially the longer I was there. The office had several socials which also helped as it gave me a chance to get to know people in a different light whilst also showing off my personality. Everyone helped me if I had any questions and I feel I added value and helped out with their work whenever I could
My manager gave me a lot of support and guidance which was essential in me doing a good job and making a positive impact during this internship. Any time there was an issue or I did not understand something, my manager was there to help me out. Also, any time I was set a task, it was always explained well.
I was relatively busy on a day-to-day basis but not incredibly busy which is due to my position as a summer intern. There was always enough tasks to get done and the opportunity to ask around and help and assist others was always possible in the case there was not a lot of work around.
During my placement, there was a lot of responsibility but not a lot which, again, was due to my position as a Summer Intern. On the other hand, there was a lot of responsibility with the work I was doing. I was given the autonomy to get it done and to make sure it was on time as the work I was given was always needed for projects
The skills and experiences will help me a lot in my degree. I improved a lot in my soft skills such as in doing minutes and presentations. Also there was a lot from being on site and actually working in the industry which I will be able to incorporate into my academic studies and broaden my knowledge
The Company
The atmosphere was great. There was several socials and there was always situations of people jokes and having a laugh. On the other hand, everyone worked hard and cracked on with tasks but every now and then was willing for a quick catch up and chat about sports or what you did at the weekend. The sociable and friendly manner of the employees helped created this atmosphere
The internship was really well organised. There was a initial meeting of targets to meet, documents to follow to keep track of my progress. There was also a mid-internship review to work on anything. Numerous site visits and presentations as well as a final summer internship placement review to discuss how I did
I was given tasks and articles to read which I would be tested on. I was told to read up on the processes and tasks on the Mace intranet which helped my personal development as by doing this and going on site, I was able to incorporate my knowledge and see what I'm actually learning.

Very appealing. There is the opportunity to come back after your degree and a lot of employees have done this through either a year placement or summer internship scheme on the basis you achieve the required grade. It is appealing as the amount of graduates and young employees around taking this path shows they invest a lot into young staff
The Culture
There was only another placement student with me. We would go and get a meal together every couple weeks but as there was not a lot of us, there was not a lot of socialising going on. However it was nice when there was just the two of us as we were both in the same situation
It was quite cheap yet as it is a main district area, the area had expensive parts and restaurants. Socialising and going out was affordable especially as a student with student nights or with discounts. In comparison to London, it was much easier to go out socialise and do a food shop
The nightlife in the area was great. Very good clubs, affordable and different types of clubs to suit your music tastes. It was always busy especially on the weekends and the variety of clubs means you could always cater your night to the type of night out one is looking for.
There was a lot of opportunities such as two volunteering days (Children's Hospitals and Fundraising for a Hospice). There was always something going on where one just had to ask the Office manager for a list of things to choose from. On top of this, there was activities going on outside of your department such as RICS/CIOB events
