    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my internship at MUFG as I have been exposed to different parts of the Bank and I have been able to create and establish good networks. This internship provides the opportunity to first-hand experience how the Bank operates, with more specific insights into the divisions you are placed into as part of the rotation scheme on the programme.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The work environment is very welcoming, and I felt comfortable approaching my colleagues with any questions I had. I feel my contributions to discussions were always taken into account. As part of the internship, you also get involved in several intern challenges which were very fun and allow you to develop relationships with your fellow interns.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My managers were very supportive in introducing me to their area of work and ensuring that I had tasks to do throughout my time in their respective teams. At times, it is important to take initiative and ask for more work or questions you have directly to management, to guide them in supporting you in the best way. However, my managers were always on-hand to answer my questions and definitely aided me in my personal development and progress over the internship.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This would depend on the nature of the work that the team and how busy the team was. Naturally, at this time of the year many people are on holiday and business tends to slightly slow down. Nevertheless, on my first rotation I had a continuous project that I could work on over the 5 weeks whilst I was on the team, therefore there was always work that could be done.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I believe this internship gave a good level of responsibility and accountability in terms of the work I was able to get involved in during my rotations in my respective teams. In my first rotation, I wrote up several documents that were circulated internally as well as for the credit team, which needed to be approved. I was also fortunate in being able to attend two client meetings over the duration of my internship, which was exciting to participate in.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills and knowledge I have developed during this internship are invaluable, as I have been able to first-hand learn about different functions within the Bank. As part of the internship programme, you receive an initial week of financial training which I found very useful as I come from a non-finance based degree background.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the office was very friendly and welcoming. Everyone was approachable and happy to answer any questions I had. The general working atmosphere is also very respectful, as reflected from the Japanese culture that the Bank has. Everyone was happy to have a conversation, whether it was work-related or about a completely random topic, especially over the summer when a lot of sports is on!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall internship was very organised, from the first week of training up until the end. Dates of key events that the interns were attending were sent out during the first week on the desks, so we were prepared for what would be upcoming. If we were attending a particular insight session, we were always prepared in advance of what it would consist of and how best we could prepare beforehand.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I believe MUFG truly invest in the internship programme, and a lot of support is provided to allow us to excel and develop both professionally and personally. From the training week delivered by Fitch Training, to the numerous events hosted internally for us to learn about different product areas within MUFG, I believe the Bank invests in the internship programme heavily.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As an intern cohort, we all got on very well and had many opportunities to get to know each other and socialise better. The HR team organised several social events for us such as: urban golf, a mid-internship dinner and bowling. As interns, we also organised socials by ourselves after work or during the weekends. As part of the programme, as interns we also participate in a CSR Volunteering event which was a good chance to socialise outside of work too.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • 3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were many opportunities to get involved, as MUFG has a sports and social committee, where you can get involved in different sports as well as attend events such as: outdoor cinema events or walking tours. I joined the netball club and played in a couple of matches, which was a fun way to meet other people across the bank as well as get some exercise!
