The Role
The people are friendly and welcoming. The site is clean and has good facilities including an onsite gym and canteen. The work they had us do was interesting and built around what I wanted to do, this choice made the work feel rewarding.
We worked with other interns in a team, this was comfortable as we were at the same level of experience. Generally this worked well and allowed us to develop as a group. It would have been awkward to have a manager sit in on everything so I enjoyed how we were able to organize ourselves
We were able to talk to people at the company who had specialisms, this was available in person and also on the internal company messaging. This made contact really easy. We also regularly had meetings with our supervisor who gave us feedback on how our project was progressing
Because it was self organised it ended up being down to ourselves on what we needed to do in a given day. This was good and bad because when things were obvious we had a lot to do and it was exciting to add new features to the product. But there were points where there wasn't much to do while we were waiting on other parts of the project to be done
We weren't forced into groups and we weren't forced to do a specific task, we were given choice on every step of the project and it really felt like they cared about whether we were passionate about what we were doing. There was a lot of respect for the fact that we are adults and are there to work, no one felt the need to baby sit us which i appreciated
It would have been nice to receive more dedicated training to do with some of the frameworks we were using, but i appreciate this would have been difficult. Letting us work in teams did help me develop management skills as well as strengthen my work ethic,
The Company
They wanted us to function like a start up. As interns we were given a full space to ourselves and the atmosphere felt open and collaborative, much like a university. I really liked that aspect. It was somewhat off putting that they held meeting and talks in the room but this wasn't very often
Got our pass cards within the first hour, was impressed at how quickly they had laptops ready for us. They already had a list of projects for us to pick from before we even arrived, it really felt like they knew what they wanted us to be doing.
I arrived and only really used skills that i already had from my degree. I don't feel this is a bad thing as what i wanted to get better as working in a team. That said they did regularly have lunch time clubs to develop relevant skills, this was social and good fun (pizza was also included)
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
I do like the company, but they want me to apply through a graduate scheme instead of offering a place to me. This felt strange as having been here for 8 weeks the extra interview shouldn't be necessary. The starting salary is also pretty weak, but they do have pay rises. The location is also non ideal as Romsey can be fairly hard to get to
The Culture
Not the most social place I have ever worked. Out of work events were infrequent. Wouldn't rely on the other interns to socialize. That said they were good people and enjoyable to talk to, we were all pretty tired after a day at work and many viewed this as a time to be alone before going back to university
Wetherspoons was fairly easy to get to and that is regular prices. The company also has a subsidized bar which is open on Fridays during the rounders match. The rent in the area wasn't too bad, sitting at about the £500 per month mark but that was the price for only being there for 2 months
When we did go out the main student bars were usually closed as there aren't many students during the summer. That said there are plenty of decent pubs to go to and the Oceana club is really good on a big night.
They did have a football club which we were invited to as well as onsite tennis and fishing. Although i did not personally get involved in many activities I did feel like I could have if that had been my thing. The internal social page had plenty of forums to do with specific interests aswell
