The Role
The people I worked with were really friendly and helpful, and were keen to get me involved in office events even during the short while I was there.
Everyone was very keen to get to know me and chat on work related and social topics. I even had a mini leaving party planned for me on my last day!
I reported to [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] at a senior level - he kept in touch throughout my placement and ensured that I met my goals for the experience. On a day to day level I reported to the Marketing Director, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], and he was very keen to give me as much responsibility as possible and get me involved at every stage of the company's marketing process.
I would say that I was extremely bisy throughout the placement, as I wanted to get the most out of what I was doing. it was up to me to set my own deadlines and determine how much I could take on, and I purposefully took on a lot of responsibility - which I enjoyed and was successful in my acheivements.
I was working within Energy Management at SIG, and as the division was relatively new in its current format, there wasn't an autonomous marketing department as such. I had a strong support network of colleagues and managers around me who I could ask for help should I get stuck, but I was mainly left to get on with tasks and build up the foundations of the marketing department.
This was a truly valuable placement which has developed in me a number of transferable skills, such as communication, time management, and multi tasking. I am confident following this experience that I can be successful in any work environment, and is proving an extremely valuable resourse with regards to job applications.
The Company
The office was fun and chatty, however it was extremely busy so often people would be fully concentrated on their work and unable to chat always.
Everyone was prepared for my arrival, and I already had a long list of tasks for me to get started on on my first day, with more flowing in throughout my time there. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] My manager kept in touch throughout the placement, checking my progress, and also debriefing me at the end of my time at SIG.
I was neccessarily shown how to use anything specifically, but I learnt a lot through practical application in the tasks I was completing and the level of responsibility and autonomy I was allowed. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] The VP did spend time instructing me on the general principles of marketing, as well as taking me on a branding workshop day to McCann Manchester, which was possibly my favourite part of the whole placement.
have been offered a position on the company's graduate scheme as a result of this work placement. SIG are keen to cultivate young talent and keep hold of it when they see it.
The Culture
There were a few staff nights out during my time there, there was a general sense of comradery in the office - with lottery pools, bacon sandwiches on casual fridays, and being able to leave early on a friday too. However, it was a rather male dominated environment, which i felt a bit limiting given that I was a 20 year old female.
lived in the area of the placement so this was not an issue for me. I was paid a slary for my time there, and it would have been perfectly feasible to rent a property in Chapeltown and travel in to work every day while still having money left to use as you wished.
As I said previously, I live in Sheffield and I enjoy the nightlife there, but this wasn't may main priority during my placement given that I had to leave the house at 715 every day!
The company ran a few charity fundraising events such as a staff sports day, and there were a number of fundraising type socials planned throughout the summer.
