The Role
The people in my team and the general work atmosphere made my job very enjoyable. The work was a little tedious but this is expected because I am not at a technical stage therfore can not undertake advanced work.
My colleagues were fantastic, from the first day I joined the firm I met every person on my working floor and had a welcome lunch with my team. There is no hierarchy hostility with senior members of the team, everybody just helps one and another to achieve their goals. I was never treated differently and was invited to all social events, and on the whole everyone is very friendly and willing to help.
I was assigned a buddy and a line manager which both made me feel very comfortable, and they adviced me alot throughout my scheme. I has an informal lunch with my manager and if I needed help I could easily ask senior management without hesitiation.
Often I did not have much work to do, but I did have presentations to prepare for so during non busy periods I progressed towards them, but work would generally occur during these times.
There is obviously a limit to how much responsibility an intern can get, but I was asked to review final work before clients and went to client meetings.
Having had a six week internship I learnt the basic skills and how to use the firms software, this will all help me when I return for my graduate job because it will speed up the process of me having to learn all these things. I learnt basic skills, for example presentation skills when I went on a two day course which can be implemented throughout later life.
The Company
Everyone helps everyone, there is no hostility but a warm friendly atmosphere. If an event or special occassion was occuring, everybody would be informed.
We were an introduction brochure on the first day which outlined the six week programme which was helpful, every week we had a lunch and learn session which consisted of a manager from a different department speaking to us about their division and giving us tips. The HR team were frequently in touch and we had several social events which were well organised.
The firm sent us to their training house for two days for a training course on presentation skills. There were many networking oppurtunities which were held at social places and many oppurtunities to learn about the different qualificiations and service lines the firm offers. I received a great depth of knowledge about accounting and the different areas of the firm.
Company Parties/Events
I was offered a graduate job with the firm after a manager and partner interview.
The Culture
The firm organised a few social events for us and we emailed one and another and would meet every week after work for social drinks and once or twice a week we would meet for lunch.
London is expensive but I did not need accomodation in the area and travel costs were not too high for me.
London has amazing nightlife, the atmosphere is immense and there are places for everybody to go to and enjoy.
There were social events and I participated in the JP Morgan Chase challenge and I went on my team's day out.
