    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was such a great experience. I learned an incredible amount, everyone at the firm was extremely friendly and willing to help and I got along well with the other interns too. I thought it was an extremely well-organised programme - they made sure we had a lot of exposure, teach-ins so that we could build our knowledge and many networking sessions.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt really valued by my colleagues. Everyone was very aware of the interns being there and the majority made an active effort to introduce themselves. Everyone would mention that we had done a really good job to just get the internship. They ask for help from you where they can, showing that they do value you.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given plenty of support. Each intern is assigned a line manager, senior mentor and buddy, who are all supposed to assist you if you have any issues. I found all of them incredibly helpful and supportive. As well as this, for each asset class, there are two programme leads and two co-chairs who can offer more specific help, however I found my immediate support enough.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I think this varies team to team but personally I did not have much work set on a daily basis. The programme is run separately for each asset class. Most asset classes will have weekly quizzes and presentations which means you have something to work on even if you are set nothing by your desk.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given some responsibility but it is difficult as an intern in trading because you cannot actually trade. However, they do treat you like a full-time employee. You are very much responsible for your actions and the firm invests in much in you as they do for a full time employee.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think the internship in Rates is only really going to be applicable to your degree if you study economics or finance. Nevertheless it is still really useful to learn and interesting! For me, it was particularly useful as there is a lot of discussion of monetary policy, financial instruments, etc. You may also use coding during your internship which would be a really useful skill. You also gain presentation and teamwork skills through tasks set during the internship which is useful for any aspect of life.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere on the trading floor was great. It is really dynamic and there is a real buzz. Everyone is super friendly and makes sure to ask about your day. I think the great thing is that everyone gets along with each other so they are not afraid to joke around (but also still be professional).

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was really well organised. Everything was communicated in advance - including our managers reach out to us to see if we had any questions. There were many platforms we could use to find information. We also got emailed a weekly newsletter with reminders of events, resources and any thing we had to submit.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had a whole weeks worth of training in an external venue where they hired professionals to teach us about the various asset classes. We also had Bloomberg training at the Bloomberg office and Excel training externally. During the internship, we also had professional talks from speakers on presentation skills and brand building.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Healthcare/Dental

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The job opportunities at JPMorgan are amazing. There are many perks such as medical insurance, subsidised gym, etc. As well as this, there is a lot of mobility when you join the back whether it is changing desk, changing division or moving location. And lastly, you are rewarded well for your work.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a fairly good social scene. Obviously you will get on better with some interns than others. There are some people who move to London for the summer and have no other friends here so make an active effort to hang out with other interns on weekends. How much you choose to socialise with fellow interns is up to you.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Canary Wharf is obviously a very expensive area due to the multitude of corporate firms there so buying lunch/dinner/drinks can be quite expensive. The area is also quite clinical so I think the City is a much nicer place to work due to location as well. However, if you look carefully, you can find cheap places to buy lunch and save money.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are plenty of fun and cool bars in Canary Wharf even though they are quite expensive. A staple amongst the interns was going go to All Bar One or Parlour on a Friday. However, like I said earlier, I think working in the City is probably more fun as there are more places you can get to easily.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are so many opportunities. We were emailed about sports clubs in the firm that we could join. There was an intern football match set up which was played against the traders. One day during the internship we got involved in the corporate responsibility programme. JPMorgan also runs the corporate challenge which you can participate in for free.
