The Role
During my internship I had a very enjoyable time, from day one the atmosphere in the office was very friendly and I was made feel welcome by everybody. The work I was given was important and I felt as if I had an impact. the tasks were varied so I was not doing the same thing over and over which helped me learn as much as possible. Outside of work I participated in many social events such as 5 a side football, games nights and many more where I got to know people more.
From the start of the internship I felt valued by my colleagues and I could see that they all wanted me to learn as much as possible. They were never hesitant to answer any question I had about the work and if I was struggling they always made sure I understood the task before moving on. A lot of the tasks that were delegated to me were important and challenging which just shows that I was trusted and valued by my colleagues. Both inside and outside the office I did not feel like an outsider and felt as if I was part of the team.
My mentor and supervisors were always supporting me whenever I needed it. If I ever had a question about anything (not just work related), they were happy to help. We met up on a weekly basis and during this meeting you discuss how you are getting along and if you have any problems which they can help with. They gave me feedback in the middle of the internship which was very helpful so I could improve over the remainder of the summer.
Overall I was pleased with the amount of work I was being given, on most weeks I had loads to keep me busy which was great but on some weeks I had to ask for work often and some days was left with very little to do. although this was on a very rare occasion.
I was given more responsibility than originally expected when starting. This allowed me to make an impact with my work. Once I was explained a task I was left to do the job by myself unless I had questions on it. This made me feel more important as I could show the standard of work I was capable of. They never worried that I wouldn't be able to complete the job and I knew that my work meant something. I was always given feedback on my work and what I needed to do next time to improve.
This internship has allowed me to realise one of the ways my degree can be used in a professional way. I have developed on many skills over my time. I have improved a lot on excel and other computer programmes which can help me with many parts of life. My communication skills have improved in writing and in speaking, making me more confident when presenting and explaining myself in a professional manner.
The Company
From what I experienced the internship was set up very well, I was given projects I had to complete over the time on top of work we were given. This allowed me to show I was capable of doing my own work and research. I always had support not just from mentors but just from other people who work there, as well as this my colleagues were always checking I had work to do and if not they would find some that I could help with
Within the first two or three weeks at the firm I was given many training sessions on all aspects of the job, everything was explained to us in a lot of detail. All of this training was used day to day while working here. I was sent all the training to look back on over my time here. When doing tasks I was always given past examples to work off and also if any changes had been made to my work I was talked through why these changes were made and what I should do next time.

The Culture
There was a handful of interns as well as my on the programme, I got along very well with all of them. If any of us had any questions we would always ask each other and everyone was happy to help. As well as this, the atmosphere in the office was relatively young so we also socialised with the actuarial students regularly.
There was numerous social events and activities that I attended over the time. I attended an inter office football tournament, the great British beer festival and others event in and out the office. Every Friday people from the office would go to the pub after work to relax and socialise. On top of all this, as a summer student I had to organise a social event with another student where we would invite the office and organise an activity outside of work.
