The Role
I loved working at CSL in Hull. It provided me with good operational engineering experience in the electrical field. The team were lovely and welcoming and made me feel happy to work in the company. I have taken away a lot of key learnings which will aid me in the future and at university.
As previously said, the team were very welcoming and made me feel part of the team as soon as I started. I was set valuable work to the company so felt trusted. My opinions were also listened to and any actions I suggested were taken into consideration. Everyone always asked me for help so felt like I was level with colleagues.
My line manager Paul Walker was excellent in giving me advice on how to improve my work. He helped with improving my technical knowledge in the electrical field and supported me throughout the entire placement with any task I carried out. My graduate [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] also supported me throughout the internship. especially in ensuring that the work I was doing was enjoyable and suitable for what I wanted from the internship.
I constantly had work to do, whether it was the main overlying project or little ad hoc basis ones. I always had meetings to attend most days, whether it was meetings to find out what other members of the office do, or whether it was with other interns for our group task.
I was responsible for an offshore project which was crucial for the electrical department. I was also given full responsibility in managing my own time efficiently and my work load. I was allowed to work on my own at times, with little input from my manager so I was responsible for my own work.
I now have better knowledge of the electrical field with emphasis especially in the power and energy sector. My time management skill has improved and the delivery of reports I have produced has increased significantly. My confidence has massively improved due to having to give lots of presentations to various members of CSL.
The Company
The atmosphere of the office was very positive. Everyone seemed to enjoy the work they were doing and always talked to each other. It felt like a very family vibe, with a big team attitude. In comparison to Windsor, CSL seemed a much happier workplace, and a lot more welcoming to new employees.
The internship was organised well. All the relevant documents and information was sent out beforehand in plenty of time for us to prepare. The induction was a little unorganised but this was due to the bus company messing up timings on the day. Some of the training days were not organised well, especially the excel and presentation skills ones.
The company invested a lot into my training and development. I was allowed to go on a one week Distributed control systems course up in Barrow with a graduate. This allowed me to learn about DCS and implement my own. They also allowed many lunch and learn opportunities within CSL.

I am very much wanting to have a future employment with the organisation as the graduate scheme offers me a lot of opportunity to develop myself as an engineer but also get the experience in many different areas within the company. This gives me plenty og opportunity within Centrica and can only be seen as appealing.
The Culture
As an intern group, 6 of us were based in Hull. We got to all live in the same house which allowed us to have a good social life. We got on well by living together and supported each other throughout the time. We went out for dinners and socialised weekends.
Hull is a cheaper area when compared to other locations. Dinners were cheap and very close to where we lived so this was never an issue. The rent would have been cheap if we had to pay and was suitable for the time we spent living in Hull. This was a benefit.
Nightlife was good, with lots of various bars and clubs in the city centre and nearby to where we lived. We didn't go out often but if we wanted to the area was safe, there was plenty of taxis located, and as a group there was lots of locations we could visit.
In terms of activities with other employees there was limited outside of work events. This could have been improved by development days or more drinks and dinners. Activities in the city were fine, with plenty of events ran by the council and lots of nearby gyms, clubs, bars and restaurants.
