The Role
The internship was a very useful experience and I enjoyed the work in terms of it's challenging nature and it's need for you to take the initiative. I think another enjoyable aspect was the insight events where you get to learn about the wider reaches of the bank and gain knowledge that you wouldn't be able to gain just from working. I think to be the best job ever, it would have to be more closer to what the actual job would be. What this means is, for the actual job, we wouldn't be having these insight and learning opportunities, so in terms of experiencing what I will be doing in the future, there could be a little more realism. Overall, this was a really good job for a 1st experience.
I really liked how from the beginning I was welcomed in, and given the platform to be comfortable with what I can do. I felt trusted and relied upon when my colleagues needed my help with their work and it gave me a sense of importance. Definitely not a feeling that I was on the sidelines, in fact the complete opposite.
My manager was always available for me to speak to him about anything I may need help with or was concerned about. The management not only stop there as HR was a real support for any concerns I had about the program and the future. I was given clear guidance about how to go about tasks and who else I should talk to for help with anything.
I felt relatively busy at the beginning, when it came to getting to grips with the whole working environment, but as I began to learn more, it was becoming more balanced, although there may have been boring parts, this didn't last too long, especially with a clear plan and a good work ethic. In general the balance was just right overall.
I believe that my tasks were very important and they involved input from external stakeholders. The responsibility level is surprisingly high, but this actually an incentive to work even better. I think my responsibilities became even more bigger as I got more comfortable with the work as I was trusted with more tasks beyond my objectives. Of course, having been a new joiner, I wouldn't quite be running the show yet, but I was involved with those who were.
Absolutely will I be using what I learnt here wherever I go in life. From teamwork, independence, creative thinking, there are many skills I developed along the way that are easily transferable to other paths in life and this is another important aspect of the program, having the opportunity to learn more than just the job itself.
The Company
I think everyone was very socialable and always took time out of work to talk about life in general and have a few laughs. Definitely not dull, especially when you work closely with one another on work, interaction is required. There may however be a few times where the whole floor is almost silent, especially towards the end of a quarter
Very well organized. First all the interns were given a great introduction into how Barclays is set up and what they expect from us. Then we were put into our teams and give introductions into their work. Every week there were events to be involved with for example insight from a guest speaker and networking opportunities. Overall this internship was organized very well.
We were given insight into the bank and we had a speaker series which helped give us knowledge about how the bank works and it's different areas. The firm also set up an event involving entrepreneurship. This was an external company which must mean the company invested a lot to have us learn so much.

it's is very appealing as we have been given insight into various career progressions from this internship and where it could lead us to. We've been told that internal candidates have good opportunities to further their career within the company. I'm in my last week so I cannot say for certain that I have a job with Barclays.
The Culture
Yes, every week the interns would meet up for various socials after/during work. For example drinks, or bowling, golf as well as lunches and dinner at nice restaurants. The interns are free to organize their own events outside of work so the scene was very nice in terms of a work/life balance.
Socializing is almost perfect in this area as in Canary Wharf, there are so many places to eat and drink, play games e.g. volleyball, tennis, watch live sports. Also in the next year the crossrail will open and many new events will be taking place In terms of cost of living, I would say it is more expensive than other places in greater London, but it is important to bear in mind that everyone's salaries working in this area are quite high, so it still affordable just, a little less then we would all like.
Events everyday, inside the office, outside in Canary Wharf, many events especially in the summer. So many bars to go to, so many pubs and places to eat out and enjoy yourself. Personally I really enjoyed the nightlife because it was a great break from working life and the different things to try were amazing.
There are societies and networks in Barclays that are very to join and once you have joined them, it is very easy to attend the numerous activities they have planned. For example, I joined the network involving sports and easily joined up with other colleagues who also were part of the network, and we took part in many activities.
