The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed this internship due to the great variety of tasks there have been to get involved in, as well as being able to work with a very welcoming and supportive team who have ensured I got the most out of my time with the bank. It is a brilliant environment to work and learn in.
Since my first day the whole team have been very welcoming and have taken the time to sit with me and go through some of the work they are completing so that I could learn from them. They have got me involved with every task possible and are always happy to help, making me feel a part of the team from the offset.
I have had a huge amount of support from every member of staff in the branch, either through helping me with day to day tasks or by having a meeting with them to discuss certain topics and tasks in more detail so that I get a real understanding of what we do as a bank and how everything fits in together. My branch manager has also been very keen to ensure I get the most out of my time during the internship so has made sure that anything I have been interested in I have had the chance to do more work on, as well as getting a taster for as many different areas as possible.
There has been varied daily workloads throughout the internship depending on how busy other members of the team have been. However, even if other team members have been really busy, they have always made time to give me work to be getting on with, even if it was only tasks I had done before rather than anything new, which meant I could work independently and feel comfortable with the tasks I had to complete.
I feel as though I have been given a lot of responsibility during my placement, especially as we have a double check system which means that tasks I complete will still be checked, giving me peace of mind that I could complete work on my own but that it would be checked before being sent out to customers.
The skills and knowledge I have gained will be really helpful with the rest of my studies as it has provided me with hands on experience and a practical application to the theory I will be learning. Real life experience can be so beneficial and allow you to get even more out of your studies, which this internship will definitely show for me.
The Company
There is a lovely atmosphere in the office as it is only a small team so everyone is very friendly with one another and get on well. This therefore made it very easy to join the team as they were all very welcoming and were happy to help with any queries I had about tasks or to give me additional information on certain areas.
The internship was very well organised and set up, with lots of communication with members of staff both leading up to the internship and during. This meant I always knew who to talk to if I had any queries and I was very well informed about what I would be doing before even starting the internship.
Each member of staff took the time to sit and go through some of their work with me so that I could get a better understanding of the different areas they looked at and to develop my knowledge of the banking sector. This was in addition to the training modules I had to complete at the beginning of the internship which were also great introductions into some key areas the bank have to consider, such as money laundering and General Data Protection Regulation.
Whilst the bank does not have a graduate scheme, they are very keen to keep on interns who have had a positive impact whilst completing their internship. With the opportunity to extend the length or complete the internship again, you are able to create a career with the bank if you believe the bank is the right fit for you.
The Culture
Whilst completing the induction day and other head office visit days, there was a good social scene amongst the interns both during the day and afterwards which meant you could get to know others who were also completing the internship that you could keep in contact with throughout. However whilst in branch, due to some being further away from others, it was difficult to stay in contact or be able to meet up with other interns.
The cost of living was very minimal due to the branch being close to home, so I personally only incurred commuting costs to and from the office. The branch however is located in close proximity to lots of social opportunities which would be great for anyone who was completing the internship away from home.
There is a lack of nightlife in the area which I have been working, however this was to be expected for the area and I was aware of this before starting. There are lots of other places close by however for nightlife which would be quite easy to get to.
There were no opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work due to the branch not being very close to many others. However this again was an aspect I was aware of before starting. The area itself holds lots of opportunities for activities outside of work, however this would be separate to work.
