The Role
from a technical perspective, I learned a lot and got valuable insights about the kind of work and corporate environment. Unfortunately, there were some issues with the team I was placed in and subsequently with how this issue was handled that made the overall experience a bit less pleasant than I had initially expected.
On the one hand, everyone was very kind and friendly at work and made me feels as if my contribution was valuable. On the other hand, I often felt as if this kind of politeness was more a habit than actually well-meant, which often made it difficult to get to know people better
support and guidance were provided in the form of a buddy and a senior mentor. Unfortunately, both of them were too busy to engage in any kind of meaningful interaction or support, making the whole thing kind of pointless. My official manager, I did not have any particularly meaningful interactions with either
On a daily basis, my workload was moderate to busy. While busy, most was manageable within. As usual in the industry, this would sometimes mean working long hours but that was to be expected. All in all the work was manageable and it was not too busy in the office
During my placement, I was given a moderate amount of responsibility. Responsibilities included daily tasks such as writing newsletters and maintaining documents. Moreover, they included more extensive tasks that required me to improve my industry knowledge, conduct research, and create material for clients or more senior colleagues such as associates or VP's.
As I am already done with my studies, this question is not straight forward to answer. However, I would say, that the research and valuation skills I acquired will be very useful in the future and will certainly help me to succeed in future jobs. Moreover, I was able to greatly improve my technical skills which will be very helpful in the future.
The Company
the general atmosphere in the office was okay. Sometimes people did not say hi, but in general, everyone was polite and helpful. Moreover, there was a coffee kitchen. Sometimes there were also social events which made it easier to meet colleagues, socialize, and to network. It was nice to meet colleagues.
It was organized well in the sense that a big support network was established and there were many events organized for us interns. However, from a more work-related persoectie, it was not organized so well in terms of team fit and work dynamics within the different teams that I worked in.
We received access to an online training tool in advance of the internship. We then had a training class that lasted for about one and a half weeks prior to the beginning of the actual internship. During the internship, we had many opportunities to refresh our excel, powerpoint, and presentation skills
The future prospects within the organization are appealing to me to a certain extent. That is, the firm offers a lot of options for mobility, such as placements abroad, and rotations. However, other aspects were not always appealing, such as the possibility to take vacation days, or have protected weekends.
The Culture
Yes, there was a good scene amongst any fellow placement students, colleagues, and other employees. People were quite friendly and nice at work, and always super helpful. There were also plenty of events organized for us interns to meet, socialize and networks. We also had events within our specific divisions during which we could network with colleagues.
The cost of living and socializing in the area I worked in was very high and certainly a lot higher than in most other European major cities. Next, to very high rent, items such as food and clothing are very expensive. Moreover, going out to clubs and bars was also fairly expensive
The nightlife in the area I worked in was nice, but not overwhelmingly great. There were so bars and such in the area, but no club or anything too crazy. Moreover, the bars in the area I worked in were fairly expensive, making going out a not too frequent occasion.
Yes, there were many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. Specifically, the firm has many BRC's (business resources groups), which anyone can join and which all have different focuses or interests. Those groups organize events such as lunches, talks, and presentations, that interested people can join and partake in.
