The Role
I really enjoyed the internship - the programme was amazing and everyone was extremely helpful throughout the entire time that I worked there. The only reason why I would not return to J.P. Morgan would be because it is not the job for me, however I would really recommend the internship to other people who are sure that this is the job and industry that they want to join.
I felt really valued by my colleagues and they made the interns feel like we were a part of the team. The communication that they provided for us was really nice and they also organised a lot of social events in the team that I joined to make sure that we were well integrated with the team.
Due to how busy the team was at the beginning of the internship, there was not that much support as everyone was on live executions and etc. However later in the internship, when people do have the time, they were very supportive when possible to explain complicated concepts and stuff like that.
Most of the time in the first two months of the internship, I was too busy and for the last two weeks of the internship, I was bored as there was barely any work to do. In terms of the balance of work on most times, it is not ideal, but that is what is expected from investment banking.
The amount of responsibility that everyone is given depends on how much you can prove yourself and how much they can trust you to do the work. If you want to be challenged and be put in a position as an analyst during the internship, it is possible. However it is also possible to be given less responsibility if your performance is not great.
The internship definitely opens doors to get into anything you want if you don't want to join investment banking. As for how much training and assistance it provides to my degree studies, if I was studying a finance degree, it would prove to be very helpful for sure. And in terms of other jobs, the skillset learned in banking is very transferrable everywhere.
The Company
The whole team had a very collegial atmosphere and everyone was super approachable. Due to the team that I was in, it had a very flat structure and everyone sat on the floor together, including the senior managing directors who sat on the same row as everyone else on the floor and not separated in their own offices.
IT was quite organised as there was a week of training initially which provided basic accounting training, and for my team they had team specific training set up which was provided by the seniors of the team as well as some associates which helped out to explain some concepts and key excel templates that we will be using.
JP Morgan is quite well known for investing a lot in their employees. I would agree with this as even as an intern, there was so much high quality training given and also a lot of investment of time from the senior management of the team and the bank in general.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Definitely appealing for a lot of people as there is a lot of career mobility within the company itself.
The Culture
Between the interns ourselves they also organised social events for us between each other which helps.
Canary Wharf, depending on where you go can be fairly affordable but some places are definitely pricey.
There is quite a nightlife in terms of bars around Canary Wharf, however if we would go clubbing, we would go into the city which is not that much of an issue as Jubilee line leads to a lot of places and the team occasionally do nights out together which helps.
Investment banking in general leaves very little time to get involved in activities outside of work, especially as an intern as this is essentially a 10 week assessment and we have to work extremely hard in order to prove ourselves for the hire as everyone is extremely smart and of really high caliber.
