The Role
It was a bit short but I really enjoyed it. There were many fun events dedicated to the intern population. My project was also interesting and I learned a lot in terms of Big Data. I worked as part of a team and really learned the value of collaborative software development through Agile.
I felt valued in that I was constantly receiving positive but constructive feedback from my team. I would actively be asked for my opinion on design questions and would sometimes even get involved in adjacent projects in my team. I was also given enough responsibility and had to demonstrate ownership of what I was working on.
My manager was always helpful with admin related questions. For a big part of the internship, 1 person in my team dedicated a lot of time into working with me on the project. Moreover, I was assigned a mentor with whom I would be meeting weekly and have the opportunity to ask questions and for advice.
We always had stories to solve as part of the current sprint in my team. That means that on a daily basis there would be enough work to do such that to keep me actively engaged. At the same time, there wold be plenty of opportunities for short breaks as well as a 1h lunch break and we would also be able to dedicate time to attend other events in the company, physically or remotely.
I was given enough responsibility to feel that my work has an impact and it's generally useful. I also felt like my manager trusted me with things like automating CI/CD processes. However, I really liked that there would usually be another pair of eyes to double check completion of critical tasks.
To a great extent. Having experienced working in this professional environment greatly improved the way I communicate and work with people, which is an essential tasks in university. I learned plenty of technical skills which will most likely also help in uni: improved coding practices, learned a new language, learned how to work with Big Data and although unrelated to my degree, training in finance is something very useful to have.
The Company
Relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. Lots of events. There was a hackathon as well. People usually work together and do sports and other recreational activities. People share knowledge and have discussions in casual settings. The dress-code was also casua. Generally, an inspiring and friendly environment that can only help the way we work and think about solving problems.
Organisation was well done. We received all the required information prior to the internship start date and we knew what the plan was for the whole period in advance. Communication with HR was prompt and they would also send calendar invites and internal chat for updates. We also had a weekly newsletter for interns. Everything was transparent and clear. My manager contacted me before the internship started, to introduce the team and the project which was really nice because it helped me get familiar.
To a great extent. There was a lot of available training inside the company's intranet (online). There were also offline training sessions held as part of special interests groups inside the company. We were also automatically subscribed to a popular online training platform where we could enroll in various courses on usually software technologies.

Quite appealing. They have a very prestigious graduate program. The company is also quite big and global and there are plenty of opportunities for relocation and trying out different jobs inside the company. They also invest a lot in tech which makes very promising. They have interesting projects that solve hard problems, so that's another reason for wanting to work there in the future.
The Culture
Yes! We would have internal chat rooms and intern gatherings, often having lunch together. We also had a facility in place to be able to request to shadow other interns working on completely different things. Interns also participated in events in which they could showcase their work to other interns and employees.
The city manages to keep a perfect balance between big city life and affordability. Rents are fairly cheap for UK and plenty of options. Glasgow has a big musical scene and great nightlife. For 500-700 GBP a month you would afford to go out often, go to shows, pay the living costs and maybe also travel around a few times!
The nightlife is very good in Glasgow. Many techno and minimal parties and pubs everywhere. People are friendly and approachable. The Fringe festival happens in Edinburgh which is close by every summer as well and it lasts for the whole August so I spent many weekends there as well, going to various shows.
Yes. There were many meetups and special interest groups. We even had the chance to volunteer at a farm and help with charity work. The activities outside work range quite a bit so you are very likely to find a group to join and get involved in communities and pursue hobbies.
