The Role
I completed a 10-week internship which I thoroughly enjoyed. I was able to assist my colleagues with the daily tasks of the branch. As this was my first time working in the banking industry I was given the opportunity to explore the fundamental tasks of working in accounts with the both individual and corporate side.
From the first day the staff were very welcoming and allowed me to work on a variety of tasks. They were also very accommodating by taking the time to train me and work alongside themselves on different projects. I felt apart of the team and I was also given the opportunity to attend client meetings.
I was given a lot of support by the whole branch, I mainly worked alongside the AMS team who were very approachable and provided great support allowing me to develop my skills as an intern. Catch-up meetings with the branch manager were of great use as I was able to update my progress within the branch demonstrating the high level of staff well being in the company.
Throughout the internship I undertook a variety of tasks allowing me to learn the inner workings of the branch such as the systems. I undertook the morning tasks of processing the cheques and direct debits and the branch activities varied day to day meaning there was always something to do or learn.
I was given autonomy by the staff to work on different projects allowing me to fully engage in some of the branch activities such as creating faster payments or actioning letters for customers. I assisted the AMS team in their daily work tasks.
The training received provided me with invaluable skills for my future. I was able to apply my studies practically to my work for example understanding the importance of securities and the different services offered by the bank. I found attending weekly meetings highly valuable and overall the experience of working in the branch provided me with a great insight into banking, specifically retail banking.
The Company
The office environment was very positive and friendly. I felt very comfortable and at ease with the staff as they were very approachable, There is also an enormous sense of staff well-being especially with the weekly FIKA break which allowed the staff to take some time away from their desk.
Within the 10-week time frame, I personally felt that I was given a great opportunity to learn about working in the branch. The regional head office visit was of great use as we were given the time to find out the different roles available in the bank outside of the branch, giving us a further insight into the arrow of the bank. The branch activities varied greatly allowing me to explore the different services the bank provides and the workings of the branch.
The training provided was in-branch by the AMS team. I felt that the staff took great interest into my personal development at the branch by taking the time to explain the tasks being carried out and going beyond to explain the reasoning's behind the different actions they take for example the importance of procedure in the bank such as anti-money laundering. This assisted very well with the online modules, providing me with awareness of customer due diligence.
I would be very happy to work with Handelsbanken in the future.I highly value the company ethics and believe the staff support and well-being is of great importance to the company
The Culture
The bank provided a training day at regional head whereby I was able to meet other interns working in the local region. This allowed us to get to know each other and exchange details so we were able to keep in contact throughout the placement and meet up during.
