The Role
I really enjoyed the working environment at Expedia, I met some really great people and it was a pleasure to work with them. I feel like I was able to fill in the gaps in my skill set through the projects I was involved in. I must say I wasn't as busy as I thought I might be, nevertheless this gave me to time to network and ask more questions.
I definitely felt valued by my colleagues, I felt like there was a non-hierarchical structure and that my opinions were valued. I was made to feel welcome as soon as I arrived with a lunch at Bills. I had a 1 to 1 with everyone on my team, and the product marketing team adjacent to me so I was able to get to know everyone.
My manager was so supportive and encouraging. We had regular 1 to 1s and he made a strong effort to make sure I was given feedback and that I was happy with my tasks. In addition we had personal development meetings on a fortnightly basis, where my manager gave me advice on my CV and how to talk about the projects I had undertaken in an interview setting.
I was relatively busy, especially once I asked to be involved with another project in the team. I tried to do each project to the best of my ability and try to exceed the expectations of my manager.
I was given a good amount of responsibility, for example managing the internal blog. I was also given the opportunity to write articles for the external blog independently. Once I was shown how to do something, I was left to do it independently and then feedback on my progress, which I think was a good balance.
I think the skills and experience I have acquired here will help me with my job search / career. I was exposed to lots of different projects and people in different roles and I feel like I've learnt a lot about the travel industry. I also think I now have concrete examples of projects and competencies that will benefit me looking forward.
The Company
It was a very positive and welcoming atmosphere. I felt like everyone valued a work life balance and I was encouraged to take breaks if I needed to. I was not expecting the office atmosphere to be this way and I was pleasantly surprised. I think it ultimately made me more productive.
I never encountered any problems with the organisation of the internship. From the beginning of the recruitment process I had consistent communications and all my questions/ queries were answered/ dealt with. Throughout the internship I've been impressed by the level of organisation in terms of events and workshops, and the general level of communication.
Considering how much time my manager devoted to teaching me things and the number of workshops available, I would say that the company has invested in my development.
As of yet there are no appropriate roles, however I am liaising with the global early talent team to find something within the company.
The Culture
Yes there was a great social scene amongst the placement students, we met fairly regularly even outside work. They are a great group of people!
As its London it is reasonably high!
Shoreditch is a great place to go out.
Yes I was involved in a day of caring which was good fun. I was also involved in the softball team for the summer games, this meant going to regular practices before the tournament, which also involved a lovely BBQ. I felt like overall there was an atmosphere of life outside of work.
