The Role
Working with JLR was definitely enjoyable day to day. The majority of my work was desk based which isn't for everyone but there was plenty of opportunity to get tours of different departments and sites. My manager and mentor both set tasks I was interested in and gave plenty of support.
The office environment was very social and everyone in my team made me feel a welcomed and valued member. Everyone I went to an issue with within my team was very helpful and ensured I understood their explanation.
I was assigned a mentor within my team to give support on the tasks I was set who also worked under my manager. Both were very helpful and supportive. I was also assigned a buddy who was in the graduate scheme for someone to go to with any other issues I may have.
I had several tasks throughout my placement which varied a lot. Many of them overlapped meaning I would usually have something to do. However, it took a week or so to properly get started and I would on occasion find I didn't have much to do.
I think I was given a reasonably level of responsibility for an undergraduate. The tasks I were given were useful for the team and helped with other people's projects to take some of the work load off of them if they were busy.
I think the placement was very useful as experience of working in a large corporation. I have learned a lot about the automotive industry and the current issues it is facing. If I choose to make a career in the automotive industry this is definitely a good start.
The Company
The office was very sociable and everyone was very friendly and approachable.
The placement was well organised and was clearly set out. The first week was an induction week which included an overall corporate induction for a general introduction to the company and smaller department inductions for more information about where you would be working. The final week also includes a share fair to round off your placement and reflect on what you have learned.
I feel fairly well invested in. I was set a series of online courses to complete when I first joined to gain some more background information and also attended a few day courses to learn different software my manager thought I would find useful in the future.
Company Parties/Events
I have found a lot out about the graduate scheme with the company and all of the graduate engineers I have talked to about it highly recommend it. I think being on an undergraduate placement with the company also helps your chances to be accepted into this scheme.
The Culture
Jaguar Land Rover made a Facebook group of everyone on placements this year so that we could all communicate and work out accommodation and travel arrangements together. Most people on 3 month placements stayed nearby each other and would meet up regularly at lunch time and after work.
The area I was staying was fairly cheap. There were several different cheap supermarket options nearby and accommodation was only £100 per week.
There are a few pubs in the towns surrounding the site although I stayed further away during my placement.
There were weekly graduate and undergraduate football games arranged although I did not attend. There was also other events such as go karting and pub nights but they weren't that often.
