    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was amazing. They treated me like a real engineer, gave me actual responsibilities and guided me where required. There were a range of tasks I had gotten involved in which made the work interesting and it felt very rewarding when I had the opportunity to teach a new recruit.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Was treated no differently to the other engineers, my duties were essential to the flow of work and my efforts were appreciated my line manager. It would have been even better if people higher in the management chain recognised the work and maybe even have a chat with interns to see how it is going and etc.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Everything required to carry out the tasks was thoroughly taught to me and additional support was given when requested. Sometimes there would be tasks that I wish to do and I have not been assigned them, my line manager accommodated for that and ensured I learnt all part of the trade.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The project I was working on was going up extremely quick so there was always something to do. Having said that - being busy is what I liked. The day went by quickly and you felt like you made a real difference. The work itself was not to difficult once you get the hang of it so that's a bonus!

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was pretty much doing everything any of the engineers would do. My work affected the works of everyone else as I was working ahead of them. Having to work at a pace and with high quality meant I had a lot of responsibility. But this is what made the work interesting and made my working skills better.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I wouldn't say it directly assisted me in my degree. As in most cases what you learn at university and at work are two very different things. Despite this what I did learn was what actual engineers do so when I graduate the skills learnt here will be crucial for me.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was always busy, people doing work, checking things with each other and etc. And as it was an open office- the atmosphere was very relaxed, it was easy to go up to to someone. Also on days where it was too hot- the management would get ice cream for everyone and people would be having a great time.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The work aspect of the internship was great, my line manger knew exactly what I need to learn and progressively I did more and more. Eventually allowing me to take the lead when he was not in. The only let down was IT department, throughout the whole intership access to the shared drive was not arranged and nor was CAD for me. Solution to working around this was to use someone elses computer- which isn't ideal.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Any required training was provided to me by my line manager. Additionally they paid for me CSCS card and any materials required for that was provided. There were also a few workshops which taught things beyond the workplace which was great. Formal CAD training would have been great but wasn't required.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing, I look forward to seeing what I am offered after the completion of this placement. I find out at the end of the month. From speaking to graduates, this company seem to offer a very high salary package along with other benefits (e.g. company car) so it is definitely worth applying here.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We had weekly pub nights and socials such as golf. It was a great atmosphere- the whole team got together. The night outs were paid by the company so that's an extra bonus! There were quite a few other interns (about 4) so that made the whole experience much more relaxed.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area around the site wasn't too expensive to eat and live in. Travel expenses were reimbursed so that was very good. The area was redeveloped so everything was very nice and there was an outlet nearby so things were not that expensive. A lot of student events around so cheep drinks!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • 3/5
