The Role
I really enjoyed the internship. The 12 week placement was thoroughly informative, and it was great to learn new skills for the job aswell as build on previous skills that I had developed at university.
I felt really welcomed by my colleagues. They made sure that they included me in conversations, and asked me questions to learn more about myself. This helped me feel part of the team and not just someone who was just sat at a desk with them.
My manager/supervisor gave me lots of guidance and was always there to answer any questions that I may have had. She didn't make me feel stupid for asking silly questions that I did not understand, or thoroughly grasp. I know that I can ask her anything and she will give me the answer straight away, and if she doesn't know the answer, she ensured that she found out for me. I have recieved a lot of support from my manager, even with family circumstances she listened to what I needed/ may need in the future.
On a daily basis, I always had something to do. I was never bored or not doing anything. The jobs that I was completing were fun and interesting, such as ringing candidates and going through supervisions, or ringing prospective candidates to see what kind of job they are looking for.
Once I had been trained and shadowed some of my colleagues, I was then given the responsibility to interview candidates on my own. I was also given the chance to supervise candidates and ask they questions about their role. this enabled me to understand the clients that we support better compared to just reading about them on paper. by having this experience, it has helped me to undertsnad what needs each client has, and who would be suitable to support them.
As I have already finished my university degree, the skills that I have developed will not necessarily support my psychology degree. However, it has improved and developed my communication skills with strangers. I am more confident talking to candidates now, than I was at the beginning of my internship. The knowledge will also benefit me in the future, as I am wanting to be a child counsellor, and being in a job where we are supporting vulnerable people and children with learning and physical disabilities has opened my eyes to how different people have different needs.
The Company
The general atmosphere was pleasant, everyone was welcoming, and we make sure that we meet up once a month to celebrate the wins of the office. This encourages us to celebrate and congratulate each team even when we don't necessarily have much communication due to jobs that the teams have
The internship was somewhat organised. It did take a while to get my contract through the post. but other than that, everything went swimmingly. I had automatic access to the systems ready for when I came through the doors on my first day. I had my passwords for the phone and extension number ready. And I was shown how to access the systems and what they were used for.
Reed has developed my confidence with taking to new people and encouraged my communication skills to develop aswell. I am now never shy to pick up the phone to call someone. I am also never shy to ask any questions to anyone on my team or to my manager. It has encouraged me to be more enquisitive with both work and my home life.
Very appealing. Been offered a 6 month fixed term contract - and I am very happy to have been offered it.
The Culture
There were no fellow placement students. But the social scene was good, many go out once a month for a few drinks, but I am not one for going out. But I would feel welcome to join along if I wanted to.
I live outside of sheffield, so I was getting the train and walking into work everyday. So I had a season train ticket. Socialising was reasonably priced. There are more prices places, and some places that are cheap to go to.
there is a lot of nightlife, many places to go to on a night out. But also a lot of pubs and bars to go to if nightclubs are not your particular scene.
I am not 100% sure, as I do not live in sheffield, I do not have much knowledge surrounding the activities that can be done outside of work hours.
