The Role
An exciting place to work and valuable experience. Working in a techincal role where I could apply my knowledge from univeristy was a fantastic opportunity. It gave me a truthful perspective of the industry and ability to explore all aspects of the business and industry. It has helped confim it is the industry and work place for me.
I worked on a real project and that meant I felt valued for the work I was carrying out. They gave me time to talk about my work and ask questions. They included me in team activities. The wider internship network also provided support and value with organised activities and socials throughout.
I was able to work independtly but had the support to ask questions when I needed it. The support and guidance was as expected when starting a new job and I was treated equally and like an adult. They were always happy to answer my questions. It took a while to get passed the intial lack of understanding from still being a student.
Some times were busier than others but there was always something to do. Most of my day was based at the desk with a few meetings. There was a good balance on working on the project and doing write-ups and preparing for meetings. There was enough time to work on other activities during the internship without having to stay late.
I worked on a real project and could drive the direction of it. I was accountable to my decisions during the placement and it helped to get a feel for what being part of a team working on a project is like. The end of the placement gave me the opporuntiy to give my opinion of what they should do with the new found ifnormation which was an excellent opportunity.
The job was 100% applicable to my university studies so I have been able to develop those skills. I have received high level training and been able to develop business skills too by experiencing working for a large company. The level of knowedge I have gained has gone far beyond what I expected.
The Company
The BP offices are a campus in itself with over 5000 employees. This makes it have a good atmosphere with plenty of things you can do on campus. Inside the office itself where working, it was generally quiet which meant it was easy to get on with any work that you needed. At lunch, the canteen area always had a buzz and there was a more fun atmosphere. The people were nice and created a good environment to work in. It had the right balance.
The placement was very well organised. It is a structed scheme with a set start and end date for all interns in the company. The project I worked on had been decided before arrival and chosen to be the right length so there was always something to work on each day. The assessment side of the internship is also structured. It was obvious this was a well rooted scheme.
The company invest a large amount into you for personal training and development. I was given the opportunity to take part in a weeks training course to develop my knoweldge. My colleagues were very happy to help with any querries and gave me feedback throughout. Ther is also the assessment aspect to the placement for getting the graduate role so they are invested in developing you so that you enroll onto the graduate programme.

Very appealing future prospects. The internship has an underlying assessment side to it where you have the opportunity to be considered for the graduate role based on your performance over the internship. The insight I got from working over the summer has told me there are good future prospects. Outside of the main project, I could listen to talks about the future of the company too
The Culture
There were many organised social events, many of which were subsidised. There felt like a strong community of fellow interns. Most organised events also involved those currently in the graduate scheme so you could have fun and also network and make conncections for the future. There were more events organised than I expected.
As the office was on the outskirts of London, the cost of living and socialising in the area is very high. However, many social events were very heavily subsidised which made that aspect cheap. The rent anywhere in the surrouding area is very high but unavoidable with a London based office block.
The imemdiate area surrounding the office had no nightlife but easy to get into central london if you wished.
As it such a large office, there are many societies or activities you could do on lunch breaks or after work. There were also plenty of social activities so there were many ways to still have fun. The work is flexi time so this also gives you the opportunity to take part in evening activities external to work.
