The Role
Hugely enjoyable and would reccomend to anyone who wishes to pursue a career within the built environment. From both my time within the company, what I learnt, who I was able to network with and the knowledge that I can take into my final year at uni, it was of huge importance my development within my career.
Very much so, after a few days within the team I was allowed to carry out work of my own that had been allocated to me. I felt that I was trusted to carry out my tasks, however I also felt very welcome to ask for help if it was needed, and felt like I could do so without consequence. However there were some team members that I had very little to do with, though that was understandable!
Any question either big or small, stupid or not, they were readily available and willing to assist me where necessary. I genuinally feel that over the month I have felt as much if not more than within an entire year at my university.
Generally busy and kept occupied with relevant tasks. Many days were spent wholly on site's. Some days were understandably slower and had less relevant undertakings, however this would be expected within a regular working week in such a company. If there were times I did not have tasks to complete, I would be able to ask around and be able to assist or learn in some manner.
After a few days and the team were able to get to know myself and my skill level, I was able to carry out my own tasks that would be used by the team to some degree. I found it was a great balance between taking information in and then being able to test that and implement that within my own work.
Hugely valuable for my final year into uni, from becoming confident with already existing skills of mine and learning newer skills in areas that I had not yet covered within my university course. From learning primarily a residential focus within my uni course to a more commercial/industrial focus was crucial in expanding my areas of knolwdge.
The Company
Certainly a level of relaxed atmosphere, however still very focused and professional. Team members would talk openly of topics related to the work in question but also still being able to socialise and have fun. I found there was a very healthy mix between work focus and fun.
Generally it felt very effortless between the days. But there were some gripes such as my first day I was sent to the wrong office and had to travel to the other London office to start my first day. That and that the sports day, a great opportunity to network within the company, convicted with a presentation training day that felt like it was a mirror to one we had only a day or so before. Besides that I felt it was very well organised and information was easily shared through emails.
A fair amount I would say, from the obvious learning from my day to day interaction within the team I was in, to the presentations and talks that were arranged for us a fair amount of time was set aside for us.
Travel loan
Incredibly keen to secure a place within the graduate scheme. That is my utmost priority along with completing my final year at university with a good grade. After spending time within the company and seeing how they operate, it would certainly set me in good stead for a number of years at the beggining of my professional carrier and hopefully for longer still.
The Culture
Socially it was a great time. Fantastic getting to know the other interns, as well as being able to spend some time with my team. The team did consist of a slightly older age base, and so I did not have a great amount of social time with them, however, the time that I did have with them were incredibly enjoyable.
Unfortunalty it is London, so it is expected to be quite expensive, but at the same time, you are in London and so the array and quality of where you can socialise was fantastic.
Huge amount of fun. I have never lived in London and so the time I spent there was hugely enjoyable. I have obviously previously spent plenty of time in London, however the degree and constant time being spent there was a great amount of fun.
Not a great deal, besides the sports day that in the end we became unable to attend which was hugely disappointing. However there were constant timea of spending time with other interns or team members after work hours that were considerably fun.
