The Role
My time at Arup was both fun and beneficial. Working closely with the marketing team, I was able to apply the theories I learned at university in practice. I enjoyed being busy and loved whenever one of the team needed my help.
My team members were the best part of my experience in Arup - they made it hard to leave. Despite being extremely busy during the month I joined, my team were extremely keen on making this experience useful and enjoyable. In so doing, I received exposure to lots of different sectors: business development, marketing, pr and social media.
One of the team members was my supervisor and provided all the support and guidance I needed. Whenever I felt lost, she was there to help explain things to me or to get me in touch with someone whose an expert in this particular obstacle.
At the start, I was not as busy; however, starting the 2nd week, I had lots to do. Given that each member of the team has a specific role in a specific sector, I was asked to help with multiple tasks and have been successful in impressing my team.
The responsibility I was given was just right; they didn't put too much stress on me. However, I liked that at times I was given the freedom/the space to create something without instructions or requirements. This allowed me to exhibit creative thinking and to challenge myself in submitting an exceptional piece of work.
One of my current classes talks about writing for PR and advertising and the skills, guidance and training have given me a bonus over my colleagues. Since I am familiar with copywriting, copyediting and the language used for the different social media platforms, I am ahead of my classmates. Beyond my studies, the skills I gained from my time at Arup as well as the exposure have provided me with a great insight of the career world.
The Company
The atmosphere and environment are extremely pleasant. People are very smiley, helpful and supportive. Beyond my team members, everyone else I have came across during my time has taught me something new or has left me thinking critically about a particular aspect. The general atmosphere was one of my favourite things in Arup.
During my time at Arup, my manager and also the person supervising my internship left. As none of my team members were aware that I was joining the team, they did not have a plan ready for me. However, following her leave, they quickly acted upon this change and have ensured that I got the best out of my experience and time and it truly was the best.
I only joined Arup for a month, thus, there was not much time.
Very appealing! Arup has a great lot of potential and opportunities for everyone to excel at. Every person at Arup has a particular role and rarely do you find 2 people with the same job - there's a place for everyone in every field. This truly amazed me!
The Culture
I worked at the London office which is in Fitzroy Street. This area is very employee-friendly with lots of discounts. There are so many restaurant/cafe/shopping options within a 5 minute walking distance from the office. Just a 2 minute walk from the office was a green area where one can socialize and have lunch during breaks when the weather is nice.
There are multiple pubs and restaurants around the offices for employees to enjoy drinks and food.
There are a lot of outside-the-office activities; however, I did not have the time to witness/ enjoy these.
