The Role
It was a very engaging and educative internship. I got to work on landmark projects, which kept me focused every second of my internship. At the same time I got to meet a lot of people, with very spectacular backgrounds. In sum, got a lot of connections whom I am still keeping in touch, tons of motivation for my studies and practical engineering thinking.
My work and contributions were found always valuable, and my supervisor and the people I was working with always took my opinion into account. Of course, being an intern, I could engage less in some of the meetings, but it is understandable. Better to observe at the start a little.
All the people in the company were really helpful. The main barrier for me was just taking the time to ask, and that barrier was easy to hop over. So, I got a lot interesting insight into how various fields intervene and my supervisor was always keen to explain. Super!
I think it was pretty much a perfect balance. I never felt like I was being rushed or in a hurry - after all Arup as a company is pursuing excellence and excellence requires balance. Obviously there were a few occasions, when I had to wait for some answers from other companies or colleagues in other offices, but this was a perfect time to get a tea and chat whit other people in the office.
I was given appropriate amount of responsibility. While I did some modelling, I soon proved my accuracy and skills, and was soon given the responsibility of setting up additional models and send some guidelines based on that to other parties. It was rather rewarding. However, like always, someone checks your answers and doings to some extent.
The tasks and explanations given my supervisor certainly backed some of the knowledge and practical tips I had acquired during my studies. It was great to see things coming into action. I could say that it was satisfying to see that I could live up to the level of knowledge needed to perform well at even higher positions. The internship also gave me good ideas for improving my study programme to prepare myself better for the direction I am walking.
The Company
I found the atmosphere to be relaxed, fun, and very friendly. People were polite to one another and you could find many smiley faces around you. Of course delivering excellence required some focusing also, but it was well balanced for me. From my conversations, it was not only me feeling so.
The process from the application stage to arriving to work on my first day was so-so. I was not entirely sure what I was going to be doing until that day. However, when my supervisor introduced me to the projects and stuff we were aiming to complete, I was well impressed and everything ran as expected from there on.
I got to work alongside expert professionals, that was already a pretty big investment from my point of view. I did not get to take extra courses or anything, but I had the opportunity to enjoy following some company's university courses which were interesting. Also had the chance to travel and got my own computer.

I think I made a good impression with my skill set and my ambition to improve myself. I certainly made good relationships with many people in the company and I could see myself filling some positions there. Arup certainly has new branches opening up in my field of expertise so I can not wait to be done with my degree and join Arup.
The Culture
Most definitely a pleasant social scene. Very often we had lunch together and it was always good to chat a bit about studies also. In addition, I got some great insight into their doings and what are their drivers for choosing their field. Got some good thinking material as well as motivation to widen my horizons more.
It is UK after all, so coming from a different country, I would say not the cheapest, but not too bad either. As it is a big city that I was in, you could find a lot of places with good quality and cost ratio. My colleagues certainly helped me out with picking the right spots.
Nightlife is hot and awesome if you want to be part of it. There are hundreds of pubs and clubs. You have got world-class football as well as concerts with the most amazing stars. Certainly a buzzing place Manchester is, what else can I say - managed to pick up salsa dancing and bachata.
Well, being in an office with over hundred people, you are sure to have endless opportunities. Every person I managed to talk to had definitely more than 3 hobbies, which they were actively and collectively pursuing so you could just jump on the bus and enjoy the fun with them.
