The Role
This placement was an amazing expereince in terms of getting introduced into the international corporate scene within a company that has one of the best ethos values.
The level of inclusion at work and outside of it is increadibly amazing. It was extremely easy to get to know everyone and to build relationships.
I worked extremely closely wth 3 supervisors, who were always ready to help and answer my queries. This allowed me to go thorugh my work at a faster pace and answer some questions on my own through research.
I always had work on hand, meaning that even if I finished a task early I could quickly move on to another one wihtout havng to wait for further instructions. Moreover, when I was stuck on a particular project it allowed me to change my task and give some time to think about the situation in which I was stuck whle working on another project.
The level of responsibility was not particular high, but I still had to write a few reports for some senior managers. Moreover, when mistakes were made my supervisors would explain to me what to change and why but never to what which allowed me to include my own input after the first reveiw while always stay on track.
My formatting and writing skills were brought to Arup's standards in the first couple of weeks, which is something I will definitely carry over to my University course and in the future. Moreover, I worked on some tasks to whcih I was introduced at University such as Risk assessments; however, I am able to better understand the better areas to focus upon when completing them in the future, rather than just filling in the required sections.
The Company
Everyone was extremely friendly, especially when I needed to find people for risk reviews or to assist me with other tasks. Everyone was keen to show me where everyone was. Moreover, I had multiple tours around the office everytime I changed team in order to be introduced and get a first contact with everyone that I might requriee help from.
Although I did not have plans setup for weeks in advance, I always knew what to do for the next couple of days and who to go to if I needed help or finished early.
Arup introduced me to a few softwares and advised me on the best ones to focus on since they would be using it later and the industry is picking them up in order to become more digitalized.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Arup is an amazing place of work due to their ethos values; however, it is not particularly where my heart lies since it involves more of the early stages of a project.
The Culture
I went out muliple times for drinks with colleagues of my age gap and senior managers as well. Moreover, I went to my first cricket game with them creating a extremely good bond between me and the colleagues since it is something I will always remember as a highlight of not just the internship but the entire summer.
Living in Birmingham city centre, it was extremely easy to go out and socialise. Moreover, I was only 40 mins of travel away which is acceptable. With the business park providing a free shuttle bus from major points of arrival was a major benefit.
Having gone to multiple drinks it was particularly enjoyable, since I got to know some people that were on a similar path to me earlier in their life. This allowed me to get to know them better through their opinions, since I had questions about my future decisions which they also faced.
The employees organised multiple events, which were great to go to in order to improve relationshuips with colleagues but also to network with others and broaden the scope of your contacts.
