The Role
The internship programme I took part in was very well organised with a good structure. I really enjoyed my 6 weeks at the company and I am excited to return next september as a graduate. The work was challenging but there was great support from the people in my teams to assist.
I felt very valued by my colleagues as everyone was very friendly and made us feel welcome. We were trusted with responsibility and given many opportunities to make great contributions to the audit. We were very included in the office and received invites to everything and were encouraged to join the clubs that exist e.g. sports.
The support we were given was good as we could utilise various communication channels like hangout and video chats when they were not in the office. This ensured we could access assistance whenever required. The managers were also good in that if you were still unsure on the a task after messaging them they would run through it.
I was always assigned a job to be working on and always knew what I had to do next. If there was points I had finished a task with nothing to do management were good at finding new tasks. They are also various online learning tasks you can do if you are waiting on replies etc.
I was given a lot of responsibility during my time at my internship. I was set work and I had the responsibility to ensure it was done in time for deadlines. Work would then not be reviewed until the fund was getting reviewed nearer the deadline so it was good they believed you could do it to a competent standard.
The training I have developed will not directly help me with my degree as University is more theoretical than practical like the internship. However the skills will be applicable for graduate jobs and will assist greatly giving us a head start. I have however significantly developed my computer skills which will be useful.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was good it was very friendly and welcoming. I like the set up of you could sit where you wanted as it ensured the atmosphere wasn't a traditional office and there was no hostile feel to it. It also stopped segregation from junior members of staff from senior.
As we were the 2nd intake of interns our time was well organised and received everything we would need in the first few days. We were introduced to our buddy and career coach early so we knew who to go to. We were also made aware of the process of graduate recruitment from the start so it was helpful.
We had a lot to learn during the internship and I felt this was done well as colleagues were always taking time to show us what to do. We were given E learns to do which I believe was an efficient way for us to be trained as we could do it when we had free time.
The future employment prospects are appealing and i have been offered a graduate job at the end of it. All the associates have said good things and they enjoy what they do. It is also a very good company to work for in this particular industry. Salary and benefits are sufficient.
The Culture
We were very sociable as interns together and even as an office as a whole they have a monthly socials we were invited to. It made the time at the internship enjoyable as we got to know everyone that we worked with and made the job even better and friendlier.
The cost of living in the area is reasonable for a city, and the transport links are good that you can commute from outside. The socialising has a wide variety of places and has good deals on certain places if you go certain days mainly during the week (after work) it is good value.
The nightlife in the city is good, but we did not get much experience of it. From living here for university I am aware there is a large variety of places to go to and they are open all week. There is always busy places to visit and plenty of people.
There are various sports clubs we were made aware we could join e.g. football and netball. We were made to feel included. There are also volunteer days that exist but none that happened during our time at the internship. But coming back as a graduate, there are a lot of things to get involved in.
