The Role
My five week placement have been great. I have experienced a wide range of tasks and enjoyed working with such variety. The people and the atmosphere around the work have made it even more so enjoyable.
On this placement it has been really easy and comfortable to work with the rangers/supervisors as well as with the other placement students and volunteers. It has been a friendly environment with a good spirit. Very easy to quickly get along with everyone and get in to the rhythm of the work.
Starting anything new have been done with great guidance and it have been easy to get more support or clarification if it was needed.
There have been a great balance in business through the day. There are always something to do but rarely the feeling of having to really rush through things so it seems not manageable. I have enjoyed how the days seems to go quickly due to doing different tasks through out the day that splits the day in a nice way. The rainy days have been the only slow days, but gave the opportunity to see some of the other sides of the work.
For a five week placement I think I have been given the right amount of responsibility. We as placements have done few tasks on our own, such as checking animals. Most tasks have been in some way supervised, which has been good considering the work and the sense of security it gives. Non of the responsibility given have seem to little or to much.
This placement have given me a variety of new skills and changed my view on several subjects/things. Working with machines such as the brush cutters and BCS have been useful. All surveys done through out every week and experiencing how to manage a nature reserve have been great learning. Bigger and small tasks have all been but in the light of the greater picture of why these things are necessary and important even the things that might seem insignificant.
The Company
The atmosphere have been nice, everyone have been friendly and helpful.
Everyday have had a clear pattern. It will on most days not be certain what the tasks of the day will be but there has still been a nice way of going through each day with a nice rhythm and the weekly task we have been known to do.
I have , on this placement, developed a range of new skills with the help of the people working here. It has been a nice way of being taught/shown how to do something and then trying/doing it afterwards which is a nice way to learn something. Learning by doing seems like a good way to develop here and is basically what have been done.
In the future it would be highly appealing to work at this or another nature reserve. Something I was unsure about before starting this placement.
The Culture
There have been a lot of placement students, doing longer or shorter periods of placement but everyone seems to get along. It has been fun working with different and new people and everyone have been nice.
The costs have not been any different from what the rest of my year will be as a student. Working out to get lifts with the other placements students that were driving made a transport cost cheaper and easier than public transport.
During this placement I have had no interest in the nightlife, but as a student close by I know that the nightlife in Bournemouth during term time is great.
There are plenty of opportunities if you look for them. opportunities in a wide range of interest too.
