The Role
I found the internship challenging in that the standards were high and people expect you to produce work to a high standard and come with a lot of ideas. But, I was really happy to be working in a place where people were so encouraging and supporting, and set you up to learn as much as possible.
I felt that colleagues valued the ideas I had and my willingness to learn and contribute.
Interns are left to be fairly independent in terms of generating their own stories, but supervisors were patient in explaining the necessary skills
It depended on the desk on the time - it was rare that I didn't have anything to do and sometimes it was incredibly busy and usually it was possible to manage
A good amount of responsibility - not enough to jeapordize the company but a lot for a reporter starting out
Highly useful - not only did I learn about how to use the terminal, and analysing finance and business, but also how to be a good reporter
The Company
It varied according to the desk but colleagues were generally friendly and supportive
Very well organized - managers had a structured way of introducing responsibility and there was systematic feedback
A large amount - was given a personal mentor, a connector elsewhere in the company, and senior managers made sure to connect me to reporters who could advise me in my interests
Very appealing - would love to work here, as it's a great place to learn and develop a career
The Culture
There was a large effort to create a social scene for the interns across the company - news interns were slightly isolated in that, but there was a good rapport between the group
Expensive - it's the business district of London, therefore not many people could live there
We didn't go out often after work, but the events put on by the HR team were impressive
Yes - there were organised groups, but most people tended not to go to them very often
