The Role
I enjoyed it a lot. It was a great opportunity to let me venture outside my university degree and experience its applications. It was a great environment to work in and everyone I was surrounded by were amazing and lovely and very helpful. It was very easy to settle in at the start.
I felt valued by my colleagues as they were constantly looking out for me and making sure I was always learning something or doing something even when I wasn't being involved in a specific project. When on a project my colleagues would always try to find tasks to give me.
I was given a lot of support by my supervisors. They would always take time out of their day to help me with my questions however trivial they may be. After settling in, I didn't feel intimidated at all to ask them any questions I had. They also helped me contact people in other areas so that I could understand fields beside ours a little better.
I would be busy on some days and not so much on other days. It was a good balance between self enrichment (where I would conduct self study either on the company website or through a book or going to talks and talking to people) and being on projects. When I was involved with projects I was a lot busier.
I was given moderate responsibility as I was mostly there to learn from the project as opposed to make a huge contribution to them but I was given the right amount of work for each project so that I could reach the balance between learning and contributing to a project.
I have learnt a lot during this summer internship and it has opened my eyes about the applications of my degree and I am sure that everything I learnt and the skills I acquired will be very useful for me in the future. Especially the skills I acquired relating to being in a work space and the knowledge I gained in the commercial aspects of a project.
