The Role
I enjoyed the team I was in and meeting new customers everyday. the whole company has a very inclusive and supportive atmosphere not just in your own branch but throughout the group. The summer months are the busiest so it can be a very stressful, fast paced environment but as you develop you gain the skills to deal with difficult situations. I think the job has an equal balance of enjoyable and unenjoyable aspects.
The company has a very young work force who are very supportive and encouraging of one another. everyone in the company starts at the bottom and works their way up so everyone from your branch manager to the head office staff have been in your position which leads to a level of empathy in finding your feet. there's a number of incentives for service and sales and every high perform gets a lot of recognition which makes you feel valued for the work you put in.
The management are very keen to develop your skill set quite rapidly as your performance directly reflects on their salary. due to the high pressured environment you have to be flexible and be able to take on a lot of constructive criticism early on which can be very difficult but ultimately has a positive effect on your confidence as you develop. my only criticism is that they throw you in at the deep end during the busiest months so you don't have access to one on one training and pretty much have to learn on the job which leads to a lot of mistakes and frustration.
you are 100% always doing something in the job. Theres often not enough hours in the day to get everything done which is extremely tiring. The days are long and overtime is pretty much a given in the first month. personally I worked in a 7 day branch, 12 hour days. If you're looking for a standard 9 to 5 this probably isn't the right job for you.
During the application process they tell you that you'll have a lot of autonomy in this role which I felt wasn't entirely true. I felt I had to ask my manager to do or authorise pretty much anything or if I took initiative they would be unimpressed by it. if anything that was the biggest disappointment. Saying that you are assigned your own delegated duties which you work on day to day and you spend a lot of time customer facing so the service you provide directly reflects on your own sales figures which leads to bonuses and incentives. Not to mention they trust you to drive very nice cars all day everyday!
The confidence and skills I am taking away from this internship are priceless. enterprise has showed me I have a natural flare for customer service and sales which has encouraged me to reevaluate my career options. I will return to university more assertive, confident, sure of myself and able to tackle highly pressured environments.
The Company
All of the employees at branch level are fairly young which means the office is a fun and friendly environment. My colleagues were great and the amount of time you spend together in such a confined area leads to forming great relationships pretty much from the outset. Ive not met a single person in the company that isn't friendly and happy to chat with you. Saying that its still a professional environment with a clear structure .
I think there was a lack of communication or understand from the HR level to the branch manager level which meant the projects and presentations we were meant to be working towards kind of failed to materialise which is a shame. You do receive a training guideline on the first day but it goes a bit out of the window when you get into the branch and just have to get stuck in to help with the workload.
Due to being with the company only 3 months I didn't benefit from a great amount of official training. however my colleagues al go for training frequently which includes the management. Enterprise clearly invest a lot in their work force and it is expected that employees will climb the ranks quickly.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
For anyone looking to climb a company ranks quickly and be making a lot of money at a young age enterprise is perfect. however if you're looking for a specific role such as HR, Marketing or Finance it may be a bit tedious to have to climb the ranks at retail level before being able to make a sideways move. Personally I'm not sure a career with enterprise is for my however they have clearly outlined how and when I could reenter the company if I wished to and have explained what my career progression would be form there.
The Culture
Due to the long hours unfortunately there was no socialising outside of work. However I was working directly with 4 other placement employees which made the job a little more enjoyable.
I worked in Mayfair, London so probably the most expensive place to live/ socialise. But I was given a choice of which branch I would like to work in so you can arrange it to suit your means. Luckily the pay at enterprise isn't awful and theres always opportunities to Mae a bit of extra cash
London is great for pretty much everything, nightlife being one of them. you just have to be mindful of how expensive it can be. enterprise has branches pretty much around every corner up and down the country so just ask for a branch closer to home or university if that works better for you.
Enterprise do a lot of community projects which I personally wasn't involved in but I know other interns that did manage to participate in some of the community initiatives. enterprise are also big sponsors of London pride so a number of my colleagues were involved in the parade. I would suggest you ask to be included in things like this if it interests you.
