The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed all moments of my internship, it offered me the foundations upon which to build up my technical knowledge in a new engineering discipline.
The team made me feel very welcome and offered me work on some of the major projects currently underway within the team. I never felt undervalued and was always taken seriously.
My manager was very supportive of me and always made time to support and assist me with any issues I had.
Most of my schedule was taken up with required work, although as with any role, there were some drops in my workload periodically.
The work I was given was always related to projects and not just paper pushing. My work was always treated with the same respect as any other engineer within the department.
Having undertaken an internship in a discipline not directly related to my degree (by choice), it is difficult to offer any major insight. Although as an engineer having a wider diverse knowledge of all engineering fields cannot be a negative and makes me an overall more versatile engineer.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly and supportive within the office, teams worked well alongside each other. The office offered a very productive environment with all the amenities and equipment you required to complete your work.
Unfortunately, there were some issues in the organisation of my internship which resulted in its duration being inadvertently reduced from 6 to 4 weeks.
The company was happy to send me on any relevant training courses that I required in order to complete my work. Arup has a very comprehensive online university with interactive learning that allows you to independently develop some of your skills.
Arup seemed keen to encourage its interns to consider future employment prospects within the business.
The Culture
Due to the deployment of interns between various departments situated all around the large office, interactions were limited.
Manchester is a relatively cheap city to live in with a large student population meaning all relevant amenities and budgets are covered in a small area.
Large student population in the city, offers all forms of nightlife to suit any taste.
