The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement here at Collins Aerospace. The company is very welcoming of placement students and ensures that a lot of work is put into making them into valuable assets to the company. The staff are very friendly and and taught me a lot about the aviation industry as well as my role.
I felt very valued by my colleagues. This is because they took time to teach me a lot of knowledge and because they consistently included me in team decisions and during meetings. I was able to speak confidently within the team and my opinion and views were always taken into account.
Management gave constant support during my placement here. There are varying levels of management here but all are very supportive of placement students. This ranged from general advice to the opportunity to present findings to senior management. They constantly seek training opportunities for students and allow you to take the lead on tasks.
My work load varied on a day to day basis due to the nature of the role. This allowed me to manage my time more effectively and also taught me how to deal with a sporadic work load. There were always core tasks which needed completing along with issues arising at varying times which needed urgent attention.
I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement year. I was given a lot of guidance on how to complete tasks and was then able to lead these tasks without supervision. I was also given high priority responsibilities such as presenting in meetings and produce information packs for managers on site.
The skills and training developed on my placement year will be invaluable to me in my degree and beyond. The technical knowledge gained will be really beneficial in my final year but the experience of working in this company will provide me with work related skills and experiences that I will be able to transfer to future roles.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was very friendly and welcoming. During my time here I spent time in 2 offices with varying people and both had the same, friendly atmosphere. Everyone is willing to help you and make your time here worthwhile. There is frequent cakes and biscuits too which is a bonus.
The placement was set up around the job role so no basic training plan was required, due to the role's sporadic nature. However, the placement was very well organised in terms of there being enough work for the student and also room for me to pursue other avenues of work during my time here.
The company is very willing to invest in placement students. I was able to complete a range of training courses which were funded by the company. This greatly aided my personal training and development. I would highly recommend this company in terms of the opportunities provided and the wealth of training received.

Future employment within the company seems feasible. This is due to the investment put into the placement student, the company would like to welcome these students back due to their knowledge of the company and how it operates. Also, There are many sites around the UK and the world which would be prospects for p[placement students.
The Culture
Yes, placement students often met up during and after work to socialise. There was 11 placement students at my site and we often met for dinner during work and drinks after work. The company was also keen to help us socialise by setting up events and meetings with us all during our first few weeks.
The cost of living and socialising was fairly average where I lived and worked during placement year. The salary paid by the company covered this and more. There were plenty of opportunities for socialising with work colleagues and the company was able to help some placement students to find cheaper accommodation within the area if they were moving in from far away.
The nightlife was really good in the area I worked. The area is known for having a great nightlife and there was also plenty to do for non-drinkers too. There are plenty of bars and social clubs as well as many nightclubs and restaurants. There were activities such as mini golf and bowling too.
There was plenty of opportunity to get involved in activities outside of work such as team meals and team activities including mini golf and visits to local attractions. Many placement students were able to make full use of the local attractions and amenities outside of work with colleagues and friends in the area.
