The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. I was in a great team of colleagues who were really welcoming and helpful. Knowing I was an intern, most of the people in my team, if doing anything interesting or different, would invite me to tag along, meaning I wasn't just st in the office doing the same thing the whole time. The work I was also asked to complete was also really interesting so kept me enthusiastic with the role.
After the first month it felt like my colleagues viewed me as much as a fellow worker as much as an intern, making me really feel part of the team. Often complimentary of work I completed for them and extra work I did on the side, I had the general impression that I added to the team, if only a small amount.
I was sat one seat from my mentor who was always happy to answer any questions I had or point me in the right direction. Not only was my mentor a great support, but I also felt very comfortable asking any other of the team members for guidance on any issues I had. My manager, though very busy and in demand, was very approachable and always helped me with any issues That required his aid.
The main project I was too be working on got cancelled two weeks into my placement so struggled to be busy initially. However while a new project was being found for me to work on, my mentor kept be relatively busy with whatever work he could find for me. Other team members also found small projects they didn't have time to complete and asked for me to work on. Making it clear that I wanted more work, more projects got offered to me allowing me to fill most days with actual project work instead of just finding work for myself.
Hard to give an undergraduate who is only there for 3 months a lot of responsibility, but I did work on and produce products that were sent to supplier and other external companies. I wasn't given the lead on any projects, but were working alongside the lead engineer on a few, where they were more a quality check than anything else.
The placement has given me a greater enthusiasm for my last year of uni. Seeing how my degree links into professional engineering and what areas I have applied gives it all a new lease of life. Having to produce processional documents and having to constantly correspond to other departments are skills that I'll carry into my final year through professional writing and presentation of reports to communications in research.
The Company
Though busy, the general atmosphere was friendly and fun. Working days often broken up with nice chats with team members and competition in the office fantasy league. Footgolf after work with few team members and other consistent events added to the general social feel of the office making it a positive environment to work in.
6 might be a little harsh a rating, but it took 4 days to get laptops and set them up meaning you almost lost a week at the beginning of the placement due to lack of organisation. Bar a few projects also being lined up to work on, most of the work I undertook were tasks that appeared while I was there. To have a longer ongoing project to work on when other work was finished would have been good.
Any lessons/courses that were run while I was there and I wanted to attend I was able to. Most of my team members, as well, took the time to teach me what their role was and what they worked on if I ever did any work with them. Only heard good things about other courses for personal development.
The only thin that would put me off from working at JLR in the future is the location, being far from where I am from, and not being a huge fan of the city of Coventry. But there are lots of ways around that so if a place is offered I am planning on taking it as it stands.
The Culture
I didn't live or work with any other placement students, nor did I partake in any socials due to just filling my time differently so Can not comment of how good t is from experience. However, it came across that effort was made to create a good social scene and events for graduates and undergraduates
Coventry is a relatively cheap city to live in it seems. Living near to an Aldi and Asda help keep the cost of food and petrol down, though the canteen at work (serving lunch and breakfast) was not the cheapest - roughly £5 for a meal on average. Didn't partake in many social events so can't comment on the cost of going out.
