The Role
I enjoyed my placement because it was a year out of university. I had a break from all the 'deadline stress', I also had the opportunity to get an idea of what I want to be doing in as a future job.
Yes I did, I think especially at Arup Bristol the culture is very much built on making placement students feel welcome. In the Rail team they did a good job at including me in activities and I felt valued when working with them.
Both my supervisors were very helpful and understanding. If I had a problem I could talk to them about it and they would give, what I believe, honest feedback about my work.
It varied. In the beginning I was a bit low on work which is understandable because they have to become familiar with the skills I have. Later when other members of the team got to know me they would come with work for me directly and I would just check this with my supervisor. By showing own initiative you get to choose the busyness of your day.
It varied, depending on the jobs that they got. For some I got very little responsibility. There were three tasks where I got a lot of responsibility and I felt like I was taking on a grad role which was very motivating.
It weren't the skills that I learnt that will assist me in my study but it are the way that I will be using my skills that I will help me in my studies. I now know that it is not what I learn that is important but how I learn that it important. I need to be aware of the way I do tasks best.
The Company
I love the Bristol office, I think it has a good balance between work work and the social aspect of work.
In the beginning it wasn't very organised, but as my placement continued it became more organised.
They invested in me. I received microstation training and I did a CDM (construction design management training) which were both very useful. I could ask anybody for help and they did their best to explain my query.

Working from home
It is good in terms of pay I think, however, in terms of job progression it is not very appealing I heard from graduates.
The Culture
Yes, we had a tight group who all got along.
I lived in the city centre and it was very expensive but I was able to get by but I wasn't able to save up that much this year.
It was really good. There is always something to do!
Yes, there are so many opportunities. I started yoga classes and there are so many festivals and other things to do around in the area.
