The Role
Really enjoyed my time at Arup, great to see how the things you learn ar uni actually apply in a real job. Was good to work on real projects and know that your work was being put to use somehow. Would definitely recommond Arup as a good company for a placement
Everyone in my office was really friendly and made me feel right at home. I wasnt scared to ask questions if i was stuck as everyone was so helpful. I felt valued by everyone and didn't feel like my opinion did'nt count at any stage of the 8 weeks I was there
My supervisors were very good at explaning and making sure I understood the task I was about to complete. If I was stuck on anything they were really helpful and made sure I knew what I was doing. The company also seems quite good at training staff so if I was there longer I feel I could of got even more support.
I wasn't very busy at any stages which was annoying, some days I had no work to do, but i decided to try and teach myself some of the software they use so was able to fill my time with that, definitely more work would be better to get the most out of the placement
I don't feel like I was given a lot of responibility as everything was checked after I had comlpleted it but I didn't expect anything else as I'm only going into my 2nd year of University plus I've no experince, so I never expected to be given a lot of responsibilty
I've probably developed skills idon't even know I have yet, but I have definitely developed my software skills on applications such as AutoCAD and Revit as well as professional skills that can be applied to any job. It was also just really good to get a insight to the industry.
The Company
Really nice office to work in, there was a nice atmosphere in the office. Felt like a really nice professional company when you walk in. Seemed to be a good social side to it as well, quite a lot of events such as gold days and nights out organised to
Well organised, induction and health and safety were well set up on the first few days, I got set up on the Arup system as everything was set up in advance such as the computer system log in. Got a desk and laptop on the first day too. Overall was well organised
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
The company seemed to have a lot of oppoutunites for placements/ graduate oppourtunites. After completing my 9 weeks I definitlely would want to come back again for a year placement or after I graduate. Even if I applied for a different company I feel like the skills I have gained will be transferrable across the industry.
The Culture
Good nightlife in Belfast, some really nice pubs in the Cathedral Quarter as well as a load of nightclubs down round the university. The office is right in the centre of town so there's no problem trying to find somewhere to go get food if your heading out at lunch or after work.
The belfast office had a social community as well as many other societies and regulary organised events such as golf days, nights out etc. They also has a family fun day on saturday. The also seem to get involved with carity events to try and raise money for the local area.
