The Role
I really liked I was kept busy right from the off with the assignment of a small task. Also I was able to learn some new things that were specific to what I was studying at university and also there were other Interns there so I had people to talk to during the lunch breaks.
I felt valued because they trusted me with some of the work that they gave me and also asked for my input sometimes and their body language showed me that they were interested and listening to what I was saying. Moreover they would take the time to explain some things to me as well
Support was usually there when I asked for it be it when I needed more work to do or when I didn't understand a task I was given. There were multiple people in my engineering group so there was always someone available to help me when I required it from them
I usually had a task to do because I was involved in quite a few different projects within the engineering group. Hence if I had finished a certain task with someone I would be moved to someone else to get more things to do. Moreover there were online training courses available for me to do
I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility for a summer intern. One of the projects I was working on was to be sent round the group internally to be approved before sending it round to the company globally so it can be used. Moreover in one of the other projects I had to speak with a few engineers to get information from them so we could get the project rolling
I improved in my coding skills as there were a few C# tasks I was given to do as well as improving in my electrical engineering knowledge by reading up on the background of the tasks I was given. I was also exposed to different software applications that would prove useful to me in the future and my communication skills as I gave a few presentations on the work I did.
The Company
The general atmosphere is really good as it seems to me like everyone is happy to come into work and work there. People usually chatting during their lunch breaks or beside the coffee machine. We often have days when people bring snacks from their travels, birthdays or just from the welfare team.
I believe it was well organised as they had a large influx on the first day so we would all have someone to speak to and give us time to settle in so we can contribute to the company. Also, I was able to extend my time as well which was good.
They had some training courses available to do. Some were optional and while the others were mandatory just briefing us on conduct and safety when working. I think the training and development came from my day to day work and chatting with superiors because I didn't come with a lot of information but I left with a lot.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
The future employment prospects were quite interesting as I will have a better chance of getting a graduate role with them once I have finished my degree. The pay will be good for a graduate engineer and then there are also some other good employee benefits such as holidays etc.
The Culture
Yes, we always had lunch together during the internship and would go to the company socials and parties together. Sometimes we would go to the pub after work to relax and just have sort of a catch-up outside the boundaries of the working environment which was quite nice to do.
