The Role
I had an extraordinary summer at J.P. Morgan, full of learning and networking opportunities. This internship helped further my career by providing me with the essential support and assistance required for me to develop and improve my current software engineering skills. I felt like another very important feature of my placement was the emphasis they put on personal growth.
My colleagues were very considerate of my situation: a new intern with much less experience and industry knowledge. They provided support, assistance, and were patient with my questions. The culture at the company is one of inclusion and respect. I felt valued and appreciated by my teammates and by my manager.
My mentor provided unparalleled support and guidance for the period of my internship. They were very patient, always answering my questions and providing detailed answers. Whenever I got stuck or just didn't know how to move forward with my project, my supervisor was always available and happy to help or assist.
The work balance was adequate, with plenty of time to think and process the new information presented to me. I had the opportunity to take breaks and learn about the new frameworks and technologies that I would be working with. Almost never did I find myself in a position where I was either bored or too busy.
I was given charge of my own project, with incentives to take lead and collaborate with different teams and individuals across the company. I felt empowered by my mentor and trusted with the tasks at hand. I was encouraged to take initiative and provide my own contributions to the shape and trajectory of the project as a whole.
The skills I developed during this 10 week internship are extremely important to my future endeavours. Not only was I introduced to the development of web applications , but also I was given top-notch mentorship and assistance along my learning journey. I was able to acquire enough information in this short period so as to be comfortable developing web apps on my own.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was one of calmness and focus. Everyone was being friendly, collaborating in teams, pairs, or just working on their own. Whenever anyone needed help they could just address the person in a position to answer, with a general feeling of availability from everyone being felt at all times.
Everything was very well organized from day one: all the required equipment and technologies were in place for me to begin my internship. My manager took everything into consideration when thinking about my introduction to the office, and so everything went really well with no special arrangements having had to be made after my arrival.
This internship helped further my career by providing me with the essential support and assistance required for me to develop and improve my current software engineering skills. I felt like another very important feature of my placement was the emphasis they put on personal growth. I felt empowered and trusted at all times.
Company Parties/Events
I already have secured another internship with this great company for the next summer. Future employment prospects within the organization are very optimistic, with plenty of fields, lines of business and positions to consider and apply for. There are plenty of opportunities available for a very wide range of applicants.
The Culture
The social scene was extraordinary amongst fellow placement colleagues: everyone was enjoying the good weather as well as the public shows and events organized by the various artists visiting the city. The pubs, bars, pizza places and other themed restaurants or diners provided a great social experience for food enthusiasts.
The cost of living in Glasgow was low compared to other major technology hubs like London, San Francisco or Seattle. Socialising was very affordable for eveyone, including students and young adults: pizza places had discounts for students, the bars and pubs had special deals on certain days, museums were free of charge.
Glasgow is considered by many as one of the world's best cities for clubbing and partying. Everyone seemed to be having a great time out, either by exploring the local pubs or bars, or just by discovering the city and its beautiful night lights, night events or just night experiences.
There were plenty of opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work: the local parks provided hours of entertainment, local museum provided great historic and cultural content for visitiors, and the city was full of street performers and entetainers organizing public shows for viewers coming from all across the world.
