    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?

    • Highly enjoyed the internship - i thought the speaker events and socials were very good. One thing I would change though is for the socials to be split by division as it was quite a lot of people at each event and people didn't tend to mingle much outside of their own divisions anyway.

    • Most people were very nice.

    • My managers were generally very busy but overall this was good.

    • As expected - at the start it was not much but as I proved myself this increased a lot.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

    • No usefulness for degree but very useful for future finance.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?

    • The atmosphere was generally quite serious for work in the ofice but there was the occasional social or cake provided which helped lighten the mood. This seemed the natural state though as everyone was very busy. People were happy to chat and were friendly, and were usually very happy to help.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?

    • I thought that the internship was very well organised from assesment centre day to finish. I thought that the training and pre training was very good and well organised and i really enjoyed it. The speaker events throughout were also very good during the internship. My only suggestion would be some slightly more division specific advice before we join for example the webinar panel.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

    • Very high level of investment, there was lots of training. This started before we officially joined with a few different online training tools provided to us that we could complete in our own time, and then progressed onto optional pre-training which was a couple of days of extra training before the main training started and then there was a full week of training. During the internship there were several more events.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

    • Future prospects are looking good, especially in relative terms to other banks. There are signs of a global recession however during the internship we had several senior speaker events and these speakers all reiterated how JPM would not be cutting any workers and took a long term view on markets, unlike several other banks.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

    • This was reasonably good - people were generally very busy as the hours on the internship were very long however i did get to know all the other interns on my floor and we went to lunch together a lot and drinks after work if we finished at a reasonable hour.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

    • Very very high - Canary Wharf, London, UK is one of the highest cost of living areas. Rents are very high - I believe most people were facing at least two hundred pounds a week in rent per person. Transport was also expensive, with a single tube journey to work at 3.50. Socialising was also costly.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?

    • Not much in the immediate area that I worked in - Canary Wharf is really just officies and shops. That said, London itself is really easy to travel in so we often went out in other areas like Soho which has great nightlife. Overall very good nightlife. There were also loads of bars so no issues at all.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?

    • There were lots of opportunities to get involved with programmes such as sports teams, the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge - a 5.6k fun run that loads of banks enter into, access programmes / initiatives. The problem is that in the IB you don't really have any time to be able to participate in most of these initiatives.
