About You
A lot of information provided by the company. Had previous scholars and grads come in to speak about the type of work they did and which projects they worked in. Had the opportunity to practice assessment centre style questions and technical interview questions, where we were also provided with feedback.
Always had the opportunity to ask questions and speak to employees at BP. We all received feedback on how we did in the separate workshops (assessment centre and technical interview workshops). This ensured that we could improve and use the information we learnt on the real things to ensure we get through.
Lots of information from grads about the type of work, information from employees about how to go around answering technical questions and assessment centres. Also had the opportunity to network with employees during lunch and breaks to learn more about what they do and had a more informal discussion about how they find their work.
The majority of skills learnt on this insight day will become very useful when applying to companies for internships and grad schemes as we were able to further our skills in answering interview questions, and how to portray yourself well during the assessment centre. This will be vital when applying to all companies.
The Company
Very structured, the timetable was presented to us at the beginning of the day and throughout the day each session kept to it's time period. One unorganised part however was the location of the interview practice session, I feel this was more unorganised as a room hadn't been booked and we had to do it in the social area.
The general atmosphere was very good, everyone was positive about being there on the day and all the employees and guests were very nice. The opportunity to ask questions was always available, and the atmosphere was very relaxed. There was also the chance to play an energy game to also help teach more about the energy industry in a more fun way
Provided the opportunity to develop my technical interview skills and practice assessment centre style group sessions (however an unrealistic task was provided here). Furthermore, the interview practice sessions wasn't 1:1, there were 9 scholars and 2 interviewers which also made this unrealistic, this also made receiving individual feedback a lot more difficult.
By learning more about the company from their employees and grads we were able to grasp an understanding about the type of culture at BP. Furthermore, we were also shown the training areas and learned the rules about being in the area which showed how important safety is to the company.
This insight event didn't really help choose my career path, the day was set up thinking you already knew what type of thing you wanted to do. For example, people were split up during the interview sessions depending on which sector you wanted to work in (e.g. engineering, trading etc..)
Everything Else
You are reimbursed up to £150 unless you seek guidance from them. I believe you also have the opportunity to stay in a nearby hotel (which had a free shuttle bus to the place) which is paid for by BP if you let them know first. You need to ensure that you send the reimbursement form with evidence and receipts to make sure you get paid the money you are owed.
Had the chance to ask questions to employees and grads during their presentations about what type of work they do. Also had the chance to speak to then during breaks and lunch to have a more informal discussion about the type of work they do and why they enjoyr working at BP
This insight event was very useful as it demonstrated the type of work I could be doing in the future and also gave us the opportunity to further develop out technical interview techniques and assessment centre practice which will become very useful as you apply to more companies. We also had the chance to speak to others on the insight event and network with them.
