The Role
Barclays have a lovely working environment that is very supportive. Interns are made to feel valued and their work is important. The London building is lovely with loads of opportunities for coffee meetings and food. The opportunities for learning are endless and the programme is very well organised.
I felt greatly valued by my collegues. I sat next to my team every day and was able to ask any questions I had and have them immediately answered. Furthermore, my opinion was greatly valued and I gave a presentation purely based on my ideas and interpretation of data which all of my team attended.
We had overall meetings with campus recruitment to check that we were on track and to report any problems. My manager was very helpful and attentive throughout. We arranged weekly meetings to answer any questions. I also had a mid term and end of term review to check I was on track.
Some of the work was completed very quickly and easily meaning sometimes I didn't have a lot to do. However, I also had projects that lasted me the whole of the internship that were more challenging and required lots of thought. Therefore, the work dipped in and out- sometimes further work required other people's confirmation which stalled some things. This is reflective of real life!
I was given enough responsibility that I was comfortable with. My line manager made it very clear that the projects I would be working on would be used in the future to make it easier for the team and overall governance. They were very grateful for the changes i made which was ncie.
My time at barclays is less likely to help me in my degree but I have gained invaluable experience for the future. I have gained a network and a experience working in a coroprate company that will definitely help my future career suceed. I feel that it also helped me understand what I find interesting and what I do not.
The Company
The atmosphere was chatty but also with a good work ethic. The flexible working element meant that fridays were very relaxed which was really nice as it gave me a chance to get to know other people in the team. The overall HR group on my floor were loads of fun and we even had a mini sports day.
The internship was very well organised. We were all put into different teams and given separate work but we met for meetings with different senior people to gain insight into the others work. We also presented to each other to see what the rest of the interns had been learning.
I feel like Barclays invested a lot in someone with no corporate experience prior to this - which is a huge compliment. We were trained as much as we could have been in the 9 weeks, learning about our personalities types and also just about different elements in HR. We also had access to lots of different training courses that were optional.

Very good graduate prospects. The internship provides a clear path to the two year graduate scheme based on performance. There is also a lot of interactions with the other graduates so you can talk to them and decide whether the programme is for you or not. There is no pressure and other options are openly discussed.
The Culture
Yes, we had an end of internship party which was lovely. We also saw each other a lot for meetings and were mostly on the same floor so we could chat and have lunch together. Lots of intern only opportunities like breakfasts so that we could learn and network at the same time.
Very expensive and we often ended going elsewhere for drinks! But there is lots of options.
Not much nightlife but there were endless options for drinking and dinner.
There were some opportunities for volunteering and the working in a branch for the day scheme was highly publicised and encouraged. That was a very interesting experience. But for interns there wasn't much opportunity as we weren't there long - as a graduate I hope to get inolved in some of the socities and clubs they have.
